Someone boasting he will do me in his Merc SL500. He weighs about 20 stone so I reckon I have the advantage!

In terms out a drag race TVR all day long, along a twist country lane, really depends on the driver, alot of aides to keep the Merc guy safe.Really though two very different cars in character, mad and bad sports car v grand tourer.
Oh and I must say your a brave man leaving your roof off in Tescos a few weeks ago

I *did* actually look at an SL500 when I was car shopping back at the beginning of the year and ended up with my Tuscan 2. I would probably have been tempted by an SL55, but couldn't find a decent one for the £30k'ish I was looking to spend.
The SL is perfect if you have a lot of commuting/motorway miles to cover and occasionally want to waft along with the roof off. With ABC it is actually surprisingly quick but doesnt really give you much at all by way of driver feedback...
Tuscan is a completely different animal - a massive event to drive every time I get in it. I already have a *sensible* car, so for me, the choice was easy, I wanted something a bit mad that would make me grin like a maniac that I wouldn't necessarily want to drive around London every day. Tuscan fits the bill for me perfectly. However, If I wanted to drive into town every day, it would likely be the SL...

I doubt even an SL55 would beat you in a drag race.Over 7/8ths of a mile (don't ask!), even a modded 650bhp CL55 AMG Merc will only beat you by less than 0.2 of a second...

This 'Drag Race' isn't on a public road is it?
There was a guy on here from South Africa with a T350 asking these sort of questions a couple of years back, and this... is what happened to him...Is it really worth it just to prove a point or win a bet?

Blimey, I remember that thread, but I hadn't realised that it ended up with the TVR driver being killed. A sobering thought. I think the relevant point is "Lost Control"?
We should all know our limits. To find out what those are takes a little bit of exploration don't you think?
It is not the car, or the speed, or the road, or other road users, or the conditions per se. It is a combination of factors that at a particulr point in time take the unwary beyond their ability to control their vehicle?
I think TVRs encourage you to explore those limits and that is a good and enjoyable thing; when tempered with a bit of experience? IMHO the "red mist" should be reserved solely for Track based competition.

SL500 will have no chance at all in a drag race... My mate who has a 911 Carerra 2'S' reckons that my 3.6 Tuscan is easily as fast as his car... However, the SL has ABC, ESP, etc, etc so will likely allow you to do silly things on the corners, in the wet, without spitting you into a hedge - that is NOT the case with a Tuscan as you probably know..
hmmmm JonoLondon... Sure the electronic gadgetry will enable a poor driver to appear to be considerably better than they normally would be, but IMHO a good driver would get the Tuscan round a track a lot faster than the Merc. The Tuscan provides ample amounts of feedback as to how near the limit it is and is totally controllable, mine reacts with infinetely controllable understeer for instance. I work with computer systems all day and they still do have an awful lot of limitations.
I think the one thing I learnt from my track day was that it is all about light weight and corner speed, rather than horsepower. An Elise was lapping just as fast on 190hp as the fast boys with twice as much.
