For those that don't know who he is - he was wrongly convicted on the Rachel Nickell murder and served 14 months in jail.
Apparently the investigation (that was a total setup) cost the met £3million ! and now they have to pay out £700k !!
Though I believe he had already received £250k a few years back

Stagg awarded £706,000 compensation
The man cleared of murdering Rachel Nickell has been awarded £706,000 damages, his solicitor said.
Colin Stagg was acquitted of murdering the 23-year-old ex-model who was stabbed to death on Wimbledon Common in 1992. The case was thrown out on the grounds that police used a "honey trap" plot to encourage him to confess.
Solicitor Alex Tribick said the special payment would help his client to "try and rebuild his life".
Last year Stagg was told he is eligible under a discretionary compensation scheme, with the amount to be set by independent assessor Lord Brennan.
Stagg, 44, of Roehampton, south-west London, spent a year in custody before the case was thrown out at the Old Bailey in 1994.
Ms Nickell was walking with her two-year-old son on Wimbledon Common when a man stabbed her 49 times and sexually assaulted her.
Robert Napper, 41, was charged with murder last November after a review of Miss Nickell's murder. He is due to face trial in November.
Mr Tribick said the offer was made in a letter from the Office of Criminal Justice Reform following an application for compensation.
He said Lord Brennan submitted a "carefully considered and reasoned" 70-page document supporting the award.
"But of course what he really wanted was an apology from the Metropolitan Police and I think he has accepted that is something he will never get," said Mr Tribick.

Probably an element for the sheer villification he received. Let's face it, even if other bloke gets convicted, people will forever look at Stagg oddly.

The police set out specifically to pin this on Stagg. He wasn't 'unlucky', they picked him out, and set up an operation to actually falsly entrap him into saying he was involved.From Wiki on the case said:

Using the pseudonym "Lizzie James" an undercover policewoman from SO10 (then the Metropolitan Police's Special Operations Group) contacted Stagg, posing as a friend of a female with whom he used to be in contact via a lonely-hearts column. Over a period of five months she then attempted to obtain information from him by feigning a romantic interest, meeting with him, speaking with him on the telephone and exchanging letters containing sexual fantasies. During a meeting in Hyde Park, they spoke about the Nickell murder, but Stagg later claimed that he had only played along with the topic because he wanted to pursue the romance[3]. Britton later said he disagreed with use of the fantasy-filled letters and knew nothing of them until after they had been sent[4]. "Lizzie" won Stagg's confidence and drew out his violent fantasies, but Stagg did not admit to the murder. Police released a taped conversation between "Lizzie" and Stagg in which "Lizzie" claimed to enjoy hurting people, to which Stagg mumbled: "Please explain, as I live a quiet life. If I have disappointed you, please don't dump me. Nothing like this has happened to me before." When "Lizzie" went on to say "If only you had done the Wimbledon Common murder, if only you had killed her, it would be all right," Stagg replied: "I'm terribly sorry, but I haven't."[5]
Believing on the advice of the Crown Prosecution Service that there was sufficient evidence to convict Stagg, the police arrested and charged him with Nickell's murder.
