Have they really depreciated that much? As I've just seen one on Autotrader for £1850!
It's a 1999 3.0 V6 manual, should I steer clear of it or is that the going rate for the early ones?

Yep, I really do think they have.

It's an interesting point that even though petrol is 30p a litre more than 12 months ago and there's the threat of retrogressive taxation increases back to '51 reg cars - causing a massive collapse in the value of older large engined cars - a quick back of a fag packet calculation suggests that by factoring out a massive chunk of depreciation you'd otherwise have lost it's just as cheap or possibly even cheaper overall to buy and run a Jaguar now than it was a year ago - all other things being equal.

The Ecomentalists won't like that at all will they? laugh

Yes, but my question was is that the going rate for an early S-Type, it's possible that even at theis price it could still be overpriced and I'd be better off spending the same money on a pretty mint XJ40!

I think you may be right Steve and as long as you can afford the running costs it makes it an attractive proposition compared to driving an equivalent age Focus!

But if you bought an XJ40 you'd weep everytime you saw an X300 biggrin

Not sure I agree, expecially if you saw it while driving over a broken road surface...

...although if you saw it when having a service, then you'd probably be right. biggrin

Brilliant, I can hijack my own thread!
Groomi, I thought that the x300 was an xj40 in a curvier frock, is there much difference between them?
I've only had xj40 in the past and am tempted with an x300, but do like the slight boxiness of the xj40!

X300 is undoubtedly the better car. No rust, electrics that work, better build quality. You're right that they are essentially the same car, but there were steering and suspension changes which means the X300 will actually go round corners, whereas the XJ40 will resolutely refuse to do so, but you'll never know because the ride is so damn good it'll iron out even the nastiest of roadside ditches.

My own personal preference if I ever go down that route again is a V12 Daimler XJ40. Who needs handling when you have such waftability. biggrin

LOL, I may start looking for an x300

now that would be nice...

Thanks poorcardealer, that suggests the s-type I saw was priced about right, but this creates an s-type v x300 dilemma!

There was a major update to the engine too, the X300s get the AJ16 engine.

Mate of mine's got the same as above but with auto box, has heated seats and new wheels/tyres.
Says he'll sell it to me for just above what the Jag dealer offers him p/x.
I was expecting £3k+, but sounds like it may be less..
