Quite a few shots with the 70-200 f2.8 - Edinburgh Festival
Discussion
a possible new favourite lens me thinks
Popped along to The Royal Mile during lunch to test it out on some festival folks, it was the first time using it, so this was really just a practice run. Should have more time tomorrow, oh, and the next two weeks as I'm of on holiday

Really nice shots
Guessing your liking your new kit then ?
(I'm not envious at all
)
I was hoping to get back in to the festival over the last couple of days but the weather has been terrible
I posted a few shots a few days ago
f2.8 is fast for a zoom (or telephoto).
A 2x extender would probably degrade the image quality a bit, and would result in a 140-400mm f5.6. I would put money on the 100-400L being sharper at 400mm than the 70-200 with a 2x...
Cheers.

bloody brilliant! so how do you do that? subject nice and sharp and everything else a blur. is it the lens? or some other settings i have'nt worked out yet? What would the lens be like with a 2x extender? save me buying the 100-400. Thanks in advance of any advice Roy.

i like image 13, very good but i cant see the "tog" in the mirror ball ?
Gary, click on the photo, takes you to 4hero's flickr album, hover your mouse over the image and it will reveal all, the benefit of using a 70 - 200 f2.8? Stand back away from the subject and with the benefit of f2.8 you can isolate the subject by keeping the background out of focus.Edited by DucatiGary on Friday 15th August 00:40
Oh, and not without a smidgeon of talent, a bloody steady hand and a fabulous city festival!

Slightly off topic, but are you heading up to knockhill tomorrow night for the BTCC? If so, do you know what time it starts/opens? And costs?
I'm not at KH tomorrow, nope. Don't know the times either, sorry
Was keeping one eye on the weather reports - trying to decide if perhaps going Saturday might be better than Sunday. Some predictions showing heavy rain for a significant part of Sunday... I'll try and make a decision on Friday night

Cheers.

Unless I'm wrong and someone wants to correct me, it's simply depth of field and there are a number of ways you can determine what is in focus, what is not and I will try to explain. On my 400d for example with my 2.8 70-200 and if I want to be lazy, I simply have the camera on AV setting and I can scroll through the depth of fields available and the camera will adjust the shutter speed to keep the correct exposure. If I only want the subject I'm focusing on to be in focus I'll choose f2.8 which is a narrow depth of field. If I wanted more in focus I would go wider and make my way up to the maximum the lens will allow. You can make both of the adjustments yourself in M mode which isn't difficult but you need to review the data within the camera to ensure that the shutter and f stop are going to give you correct exposure of the picture as you want it.
These shots may well have been taken using 2.8 in this instance. If the OP wanted more in focus he would have gone up the scale to say 11+ or maybe more depending on what he wanted to achieve.
Great set of photo's btw!

The 70-200 f2.8 is pretty horrible with a 2x extender, especially wide open at 400mm f5.6. It's not bad at all with a 1.4x, if that would be enough reach for you. There's a good comparison on the Luminous Landscape site: http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/lenses/400v4...
I ended up buying a 100-400 for daylight sports after testing that against the 70-200 and various converters. I'm going to complement it with a nice small 200mm f2.8 prime for traveling and street photography, but as always, it depends what feels right to you. If you're in London, Fixation have very competitive weekend rental prices to try before you buy.
Anyway, back on topic now...

Pete
Thanks a lot everyone, I'm pretty new to this candid street stuff, so appreciate the comments

Thanks Cryton
Here's a couple more. I should be heading up tomorrow again as there's some rain forecast, may be good to get some wet weather shots for a change, should really take advantage of the weatherproof L's..

And a couple of shots from above with some processing.
