Brakes??????????

With all this talk about what pads are best for the car, thought I would ask the question.
I have the standard AP set-up on mine, new discs and pads recently, ( by previous owner ), but the brakes feel very "wooden", not sure if that's the right word, but it's the easiest way I can describe them, you feel eveything through the pedal, lot's of vibration, and also the brakes are not gradual, it seems all or nothing. When I say vibration, it's not that bad that everything wobbles, just feels like a very basic braking system would feel on a very old car.
I've checked all the pads and discs, cleaned and re-greased with copper-slip, there's no play in the wheel bearings and the discs seem to run true, ( although I have not checked with DTI ).
Cannot find any logical reason why they should feel like this, having said that, they do work, to the point that they will lock the wheels up, just don't feel right under normal conditions.
