I may well be one of the few standard'ish cars left, but I am considering options for a little more nice V8 noise.

Initially, a switchable exhaust sounded like the best idea as I really like the current quiet motorway cruising volume, except I found from monkfish this week that they aren't possible on a 5.7 VXR.

So the solutions are...
1 - The standard wortec with the £850 pricetag (plus the cost of the re-map). There is no doubting the sound is awesome, but still reasonably loud for a car I drive every day. I also am struggling with handing over a big chunk of cash when I'm not sure I want it.

2 - The half way approach that the muppet took (topic and photos in link below), of replacing the centre exhaust boxes with straight tube. Not as loud as the wortec, but still has a bit of V8 burble, and about £50 cost!

www.hsv.org.uk/topic.asp?h=27&t=535416&r=8025354&hm=124780

Monkfish said a couple of their customers had done the second option... and i'd like a view on whether it was a good idea, or you wish you had left it as it was originally.
If any of the real experts think it's a really bad idea, then I probably won't mess with it!

Cheers

£850? pfft.. no way pedro. smile

centre boxes defo a good option.

i'm considering side exits with really skinny tips that are just noticeable.. that should make an intersting noise. *grin*

I can post some pics of the completed sections next week if it will help. I re-used the original brackets too.

That would be brilliant thankyou. Usually bad ideas are quickly met with comments of 'why you shouldnt' on the forum, so I'm guessing this must not be seen as a bad option from the tuning/ modification experts

i have a longlife cat back on my ute and i think it was about 350 the best thing is you can choose how loud u want it mine is quite which is louder than standard but still fine for motorways maybe a little drony but it's a auto which makes it worse

ive thought of this myself but i would get someone to do it for me either removing the centre silencers or the rear ones. anyone think this may screw the map up sufficiently to cause problems?

Hi there. I have this setup without the centre box. I have to say that at 1,950 - 2,150 rpm it is a bit loud but the rest of the time I hardly notice it. People outside the car, that's a different story!

I have no idea what its like with the centre box in. I have never bothered.

Happy to take you out for a spin if we ever meet thumbup

edit: Forgot to say, I did this youtube video:

Sounds great IMO

Couple of exhausts for sale in the Pistoheads Classifieds if that helps.

Cheers for the offer of a ride. I can only guess (and take good advice on) what the noise is like inside the cars which is what matters for 90% of the time I spend in the car. I am at Vixpys Dyno day on Saturday so hopefully will get to hear a wide range of different exhausts. Not sure if that will help make my mind up, or just confuse me more...

Is anyone with an 04 VXR going to the dyno day?

I went down a similar route this summer; took out the centre boxes.

got various advice that to remove rear box would give a lot of droning.

result is very good; nice burble, bit noisy when setting of, but almost the same as standard when on the move, and on motorway.

very good value mod.

Mine was an 04 too; cut the pipes just after the balance pipe, but before they had been squashed on top (why?). ran two pipes, and put in bends so they joined up with the rear silencer at its brackets, so that I can easily replace if needed.

any more info, give me a call

I had the wortec exhaust fitted to mine, and went for the 'superloud' option initially. As has been said, it's very drony at certain RPM, which I found for an everyday driver was just too intrusive on the motorway. Had the silencers put back on to get it just 'loud', and now it gives a nice V8 burble and roar under acceleration. This apparantly was the originally designed setup, but people demanded more noise

those side exhausts look like the ones SPINTECH do for teh goat in the US.

I looked into them, but although they were quite cheap, the costs to freight were silly, and then there was whatever HM Cust may choose to add?

anyone got them over here?

Right, so I've decided to do this and just need to find an exhaust workshop with a MIG welder.

I am not one to gripe usually about england versus the rest of the world, but I had thought this would be quite an easy task!

It seems that exhaust workshops in the whole of the UK are filled with spotty kids who have spent way too long in the hairdressers, drive 1 litre corsas covered in fibreglass crap, they can't dress themselves or speak properly, and they wouldn't know what to do with a welder even if someone offered their workshop one. Unless an exhaust needed unbolted, then an exact replacement one bolted in, they haven't got a bloody clue! mad banghead

Rant over... and I feel better too

It is no wonder when I tried to call the only motorsport based exhaust company that I know of anywhere near me (Simpsons in Slough), they were fully booked until October.

2 x 12" sections of 2 1/4 inch straight pipe welded in isn't exactly a hard job, but finding someone within berkshire or the surrounding counties might be...

Any ideas please????

I'll give them a call tomorrow. Someone else mentioned Profusion customs near colnbrook too, although they also do things like Lambo doors, etc so I'm slightly dubious after todays experiences!

Going to look into this for mine, is the HSV the same as in it had the two silencers?

Does this effect the car in any other way apart from the noise of course, I take it it doesnt need any find of remap?

Are side exits allowed in the UK?

I don't know why but I always had this thought that they weren't allowed. But you get vans etc with them so.... ???
