Hi,

I'm looking to get my dad a present for his 60th birthday and since he is a bit of a historic car nut, I figured a nice scale model would go down well.

I've used google to find some possible purchases and came across the CMC 1:18 Mercedes 300 SLR (722 version) which I thought looked nice.

I've never bought any scale models before and was hopig that you guys could share some of your expertise on the subject. So, firstly, is this a good brand to buy? The detail on the website looks very impressive but we all know the camera can lie!

Also, if I did plump for one of these, where would be the best place to buy? Most of the websites I've found selling it have been overseas which I don't have a problem with but I'd rather but from somewhere that was recommended by those in the know.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Nik

This one here;

300SLR?

Looks very nice. I've only heard good things about CMC's models.

ETA: There's also 2 from Diecast Legends (I know, some people here hate them, I've never had anything other than excellent service)

Yep, that's the one.

It seems to work out cheaper to buy from overseas, particualarly the US. Has anyone here had any experience of buying from Legacy Motors?

It looks like they will ship overseas (althought the exact cost isn't given)and at current exchange rates it's working out about £140 compared to £180 in the UK.

I have one.

CMC are easily the best model company out there. If the real car had leather seats the model will,if it had cotton seats the model will,if there was a tiny bit of leather under a door the model will have the tiny bit of leather under the door etc,i think you can see where its going laugh

Although due to the model being highly detailed with alot of parts i would suggest paying abit more for somewhere in the uk (or indeed www.modelissimo.de in Germany) because it saves the time having to ship it back in case there is a problem with it.

Hi

I purchased one of the CMC models (Ferrari 250GT) off ebay last year from an Athens based seller. Arrived perfectly ok the next day. So I'd say check the feedback in detail and you should be ok. The saving was around 30 pounds IIRC.
The CMC models really are second to none if you want 1:18 scale, and they have some interesting historical models, albeit mostly Genrman. It's a great idea for a special present.
Exoto are the other company I would look at (again check e-bay). Exoto's models are up there with CMC, and have a more US/UK flavour to their range if that's what you are after eg. AC Cobra / Ford GT40 etc.

Used Legacy years ago - again check feedback on eBay and you should be Ok.

From my old copies of model collector, some of the early variants of this model were prone to metal fatigue.

You should be OK with this release though.

Cheers
