Bonnet with hings - home made

Finally I can open the main bonnet on my Tuscan as it should be!

I did all the work by myself. See the pics and do it on yours as well if you like.

this looks really like a solid construction - well done !!!

Looks like no more but some 250 Suisse francs of material + a lot of work... Reminds me of my surfboard repair times with lots of fiberglass mats + resin :-)

Can you still open the service bonnet separately ?
How did you replace the upper nuts (did you place telescopic lift arms there) ?
How do you fix/open the main bonnet ? Did you keep the original nasty (need thin, or will squeeze fingers) bonnet bolt-clips at the top end ?

did you use gas struts to keep the bonnet up? pics would be great.

what happens at the bolts half way up the bonnet, and what happens at the top by the windscreen.

Hi Brem,
It looks very good.
I know you have done the mod with the new Swiss air box.
How much access have you got to your air filter. That was my concern regarding the air box mod before.
Still, very nice job.
I wouldnt mind driving down to Switzerland to take a look. (I'm in northern Germany at the moment).

Do you have to cut away the "tubes" the fit around the oil/water fillers etc to allow it to hinge like this ? I have a MkI and the tubes are pretty deep, lifting the bonnet out needs alot of "straight-up" movement...

Am I correct in thinking that the inspection bonnet opens on the normal hinges, and the main bonnet in on your new hinges. I guess you release the inspection bonnet and then raise the main and inspection bonnets together. Had a good look at my Mk2 and I've only a 5mm gap between an open inspection bonnet and main, so unless they move together they would foul. I'm going to S&D in Blackpool tomorrow to see if they will do mine for me, using the same idea. If they agree to do it, could you supply the hinge (obviously I'll pay for them).
Where did you have to remove the fibreglass, can't quite tell from the photos. Was it the main bonnet, grill or body.
How easy is it to fully remove the bonnet, just thought my service guys may still want the whole bonnet off.

thanks for all the responses.
i can open only the service bonnet as it was before. i also have the uper retainer as they where.
if i like to open both i have to unlock the service bonnet and the uper retainer and then i can open both bonnets in one step.
so far i have no gas struts, only a normal strut. but thats okey for me.
i saw the video of plasticman's bonnet with hings and this looks even better to handle but mine was done home made for about £100.-
