156 V6 auto ? opinions?
Discussion
To replace my Volvo T5 auto I want something smaller, with 5 or 6 cylinders and an auto 'box.
Prefer rwd, so looking at BMW 3-series.
However, I've always admired the 156. They seem to be highly regarded, and look like very good value compared to the BM.
Somewhere, probably on PH, I read opinions that the auto box doesn't suit the power characteristics of the V6 engine.
I'm assuming this means that it performs best at higher revs, whereas I prefer a 'lazy' engine with plenty of low-down torque.
I'm not looking for a traffic-light grand prix winner - just a stylish, gutsy, comfortable car with reasonably sharp handling.
There's a couple of nice looking examples on ebay, but they're miles away.
Should they be on my shortlist, or will I be disappointed?
I'd be grateful for any advice/opinions.
Thanks.

the V6 does have a low amount of torque for a 2.5 engine (222 n-m) although this can easily be sorted with a remap. I am not sure on the characteristics of the auto box, mine pulls nicely from low revs in any gear though. I think I am right in saying the auto is a 5 speed (manual is 6) so this should be better for low down torque.
Lovely cars inside and out. The value for money is outstanding, I got my '99 S reg 2.5 with red leather and all associated toys for £1500 having done 70,000 miles.
