Hi Craig,

Have to agree its very subjective. I Have detailed a few Lotus Elises (S2) recently and the black used has been very impressive once polished up. The substrate material is going to have a lot to do with it, depeneding if your going to paint on metal panels, fibreglass etc, oh and not to forget obviously how good your painter is with prep.........

Here is a pic of a recent black Elise so you can see what I mean:-

If you want colour codes etc then I can get that

I've got a BMW in Ruby Black which has red metallic flecks in it. It has to be quite sunny to see it but it looks pretty good - a sort of very dark purpley brown from a distance. Sorry, no pictures yet. TBH I'm not sure I can pick it up on a photo anyway.

Audi Phantom black is a real nice finish, I have detailed a few R8's now in this colour, along with around a dozen Q7's. Original presentation from new is, how can I say, not the best but with a little work can look amazing:-

For a good metallic type paint in black try BMW carbon black it really changes colour in the correct light but also looks straight black in dull conditions

Carbon black on a 3 series link below

For best depth and mirror type black then you need to go for a non pearl or metallic black! i am trying to think of a modern black that is not metallic this picture below is from a evo 6 but still has the slightest metallic in the paint !!

Saab's SVART black is absolute pure black, no pearl. In the old solvent tint mix system it used to be Jet Black and binder, nothing else. As dark and pure as it gets.
