x308 gearbox issue

Morning all,

Driving down the M11 yesterday in my 1997 V8 XJR, went to put the box into cruise, no go.
Then noticed I was doing over 4000 RPM in drive, when it should have been something like 2000, seemed to be stuck in 3rd gear, no change anywhere in the J gate.
When we came to the inevitable halt which is the M11, I tried to put the box into park and reverse, this was ok, but still only 1 gear, I guess 3rd.
I then turned the engine off and restarted, and it seemed to change gear, could only get into 2nd as the traffic did'nt allow otherwise. Then had to leave the car for a couple of hours. Upon starting it again all was OK, all the way home.
BTW did go through a Ford very slowly on the way out of my village about 20 mins before I noticed the problem yesterday, but I often go through the Ford, so I dont think this was the reason.
Any gearbox experts out there that may have any ideas.
There were no warning lights on the dash, to give a clue.

Have you tried drying the car out underneath - garage and fan heater perhaps - and using it? While you're doing this it might help cycling the gearlever from Park to 2 several times as well

Could be some water has got into the electrics and that's confused the gearbox.

Thanks for your suggestion Steve, I'm going out in it, in a minute. I'll see what it's doing now. It's just that I hav'nt come across these symptoms on any forums I've looked at.
