On the way to work I go through a village which is a 30mph limit. It's a small village so the limit is only for about a mile. Today as I enter the 30 zone there is a black rectangle about 1ft x 2ft on legs about 3ft from the ground on the pavement my side. Opposite is a guy in a yellow jacket with a clip bord watching the cars coming towards him on the other side of the road. Towards of the end of the 30 zone (about 3/4 of a mile down the road) there are 3 black lines across the road (the type the council use to count cars).

Does anybody know if this is some kind of speed trap (or test of a new device?) or was it simply some kind of council counting device???? I coundn't tell if the bloke in the yellow jacket was BiB or council.

Cheers

It could be a Mini-Gatso camera. These are usually manned. They are a camera on top of a short tripod, and they take a picture of the back of the car like a normal Gatso does - they work on radar. They have what looks like a toolbox underneath them as well.

Not very common but I have seen them in Essex and Dorset.

WGN - The device opposite the geeza in yellow was a fairly serious looking matt black metal rectangle on legs but no sign of a camera!? I wondered if it was bouncing a signal of some sort??!! therefore timing the vehicle from when they went over the strips at the other end of the village!!??

206 - It's always on the shopping list!! Just need the £350

Never tried Tequila, but I will..

As to the three rubber strips, that was a DS2/Truvelo speed trap and the yellow jacket was very likely on a bobby.

See www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/frames.htm for more info. Scroll down the index on the left and you wil come to DS2 Truvelo. Nice piccies of the three strips too. And of course they don't emit radar.

Council speed and traffic counters will only have two strips.

Tequila's great by the way - just don't do about 10 every night (along with all the usual pints) on a 4 day stag do - think it was definately a near death experience!!!!!

Looks like it'll be £400 because you need GPS as well as a detector now
