So today I was given my birthday present, a Nikon D40. 30 images into ownership I have an error message appearing after every photograph I take.

The error reads: "Error - Press Shutter Release Button"

I have googled this and it does seem to be a common problem with many alternative thoughts on possible solutions.

The camera was purchased by a family member from Currys earlier today and I fear that are not going to give a hoot about this and just point me Nikons way.

How is Nikons customer service? Any thoughts on my situation?

Thanks

Take it back.
If they cause any trouble tell them it's not fit for purpose under the Sale of Goods Act.

Go back to the shop and politely tell them you want it replaced. Don't take no for an answer and don't let them fob you off with a repair.

/\ what he said. They are legally bound to replace, not repair. Just sounds like a dodgy unit... rare, but happens.

Do Nikon produce well made cameras? Do they have a reputation for high quality?

Nikon and Canon are the most respected marques in the DSLR market. I've owned a dozen Nikons and have hardly had a problem. If I have it has been sorted straight away.

That is both reassuring and frustrating.

Perhaps I have just picked up a pup.

Just get it replaced. Next one will be fine.

Walked into the shop. Informed them of the issue and 1 minute later walked out with a brand spanking new D40.

Spent all evening annoying the cats with it. Brilliant and very happy

It goes to show the advantage of buying from a real shop. It's very easy these days to trawl eBay and other online sources for the very cheapest, but there's nothing like walking and and saying 'Duff, another please good man!'
