I have a friend who cannot keep alchohol at home without drinking it almost immediately, for instance I recently bought him a bottle of rum back from Barbados and by the following morning he had drank it on his own.
I don't mind a can or two perhaps or a something a little stronger if I think I,m going to struggle to get to sleep. I have bottles of wine that that have been stored for a few months and always have the usual spirits to hand incase we have visitors. So am I the stick in the mud or does he need help. Oh and by the way whenever we go for a drink he always insists on getting wnakered. Good bloke tho.

Never used to. As I get old, though, I like a beer or two before bed. For example, tonight, I've had a bottle of Tiger, a Bishop's Finger (matron!) and a Hobgoblin.

That'll do.

I've usually got some beer and wine in the house, however in the fifteen years I've lived here I think I've only ever had a few beers on about five occasions when I haven't had guests here.

Caning a bottle of run in one evening alone at home may suggest a problem.

It sounds like he may have a serious problem in the making. Drinking at home, alone, is never a good sign.

Without knowing the bloke I'm loathe to offer any advice but you may have a chat with him about it. If he believes that he has a problem that is getting out of hand, maybe you could suggest that he phones Alcoholics Anonymous.

Alternatively, you could call them yourself. They will not telephone him or contact him directly. The 'problem drinker' must contact AA themselves and ask for help. However, they will send you some literature in the post that you can either hand to your friend or just have lying around in your place when he comes over to visit. Amongst the literature will be a leaflet aimed at friends or relatives that you might find helpful.

I have a pregnant wife. I drink at home alone. It's the context that tells you whether there's a problem. Having a couple of beers or glasses of wine with dinner and/or while watching a DVD is not a problem. Gettign drunk on your own may well be.

Is it like nicotine addiction? They have to recognise the problem and be ready to change?

The problem here is you bought him something good - I've demolished a good bottle of spirits in one sitting for fun many a time.

Buy him some rough crap, problem solved.

I have two bottles of Absynthe in the house that I'm actually afraid to open.

Definitely. That's quite shocking.

I might have the occasional single malt, Baileys or glass of red (started buying those small bottles for when I feel in the mood as half a bottle in two consecutive days is too much for me). I've got 3 or 4 bottles of champagne that I'm saving until I can think of a good reason plus some hideously strong Finnish vodka that is slowly getting dusty.

Having the occasional drink isn't a problem; it's when you need to have it and have a craving for it that there is a problem. Another way of determining whether things are out of hand is if you feel better after it (think pre and post cigarette) or perhaps it changes your mood.

I have lots of drinks at home that it would never occur to me to drink alone the usual spirits and hard stuff but then I wouldn't drink them in company either.

However an ice cold glass of Pinot and I consider the dogs "company" ! wink

A bottle of rum in a night though! eugh! he must have felt really unwell after that, the smell of it alone makes me ill!

Open it.

Trust me on this.

It may be strong, but it will be smoother than you can believe.

Yeah, you are right. I should clarify. Drinking large amounts at home, alone, consistently. Being unable to stop once one has started. Obsessing about getting home, alone so that one can drink, is never a good sign.

Hows that?
