Why do people driving little cars/soft roaders need to catch up and try and prove something? I've seen people doing crazy overtaking manoeuvres just so that they can get to my back bumper where they sit about 1 foot back with their car on the white line? Other times I've seen 1.2 corsas nearly going sideways in an attempt to catch up. On other occasions I've been driving down country lanes (60 limit) to have somebody in a RAV4 risk life and limb to try and hold on/catch up. Latter down the road when you encounter traffic, the idiot catches you up again with him braking hard at the last moment so that he can sit nicely 1ft from your back bumper. Other times, people will run red lights, overtake on blind bends, not slow down in a village, just to scrap back some of the disadvantage of having 300bhp less.

My point is, if they go off the road or hit somebody would you be done as well if 3rd parties claimed you were 'racing' (you weren't actually just driving your car within its limits).

Whilst I do like to follow some nice metal to hear the sound of the engine and appreciate the looks I always do it at a good distance.

However I do usually get forced out of the way by idiots who, like you say, risk life and limb (and endanger others) to get a view of the said supercar.

The people who I'm referring to aren't doing for a look, its more a case of "you may have a faster car than me but I'm a better driver, look I can keep up with you and I'm ready to overtake".

I followed a three lorry convoy doing 40 mph for around 6 miles,on coming saturday holiday trafic nose to tailand no chance of overtaking. Decided not to tail gate the lorry in front as there was no point, tit in 100hp Nova 2 inches of my bumber. If I went to my nearside he would have alook down my out side, if i went wide he would have a look down my inside. he did this for mile after mile. I knew there was a short length of up hill dual carrige way and what do you think he did as we aproched ? I was in a 500 odd hp AMG

1) Try to follow me past
2) Try to beat me to the over take and box me in so i had to wait for him.
3) Try to over take me and the 3 lorrys in gap that I could not get past 1 car in and nearly hit a HGV head on ?

I'd guess 3) as its too complicated for you to make up. A friend had a SL55, they certainly have a LOT of go. You just reminded me of an incident in it, we were on an uphill slip road (I was the passenger) which went from two lanes to one before joining the motorway. Some young women (looked like a school teacher type)in a old metro tried to undertake to beat us to the single lane section, as it became obvious that her car didn't have enough grunt she started beeping her horn at us while driving over the hatched area(they just won't admit defeat). I surprised the growl of that V8 didn't shake her windows out LOL.

I get this a fair bit - especially with the roads round these parts (lots single lane A-class) if you have a quick car you tend to overtake several cars in a single manoeuvre simply because you have the power to do so, and this seems to inspire/offend (haven't worked out which) one of the people you have overtaken to try and keep up....this happened on Saturday when following a queue of 4 cars at 40mph, I missed a couple of good overtaking opportunities to allow any of the cars in front to try an overtake, but they didn't so on the next straight when they still weren't moving I dropped a couple of cogs and squirted past - no problems, no drama and no-one else made any signs of overtaking.

A couple of miles later the last of the 4 (an Astra CDTi) can be seen in my mirrors driving well beyond his capabilities and doing some very poorly judged overtakes - obviously all to try and catch me. Never quite sure why they want to catch up, is it to try and re-overtake, or is it to sit behind and stare? Either way it forces me to either pull over or go another direction - as even though I have no control over their actions, if they wipe-out trying to catch up I'm sure the witness reports would state he was racing the ferrari and I get into st.

Your not alone I seem to have had loads and loads of these idiots lately !!!!

My soloution is simple and really takes the wind out of their sails in a very very big way, I had a saxo or whatever right up my backside on a country lane on friday ( typial sceneario 3 chavs in the car)

First lay by I pulled half in stopped then let them pass q lots of very confused chavs in corsa, no risk of back of car being run into and a relaxing drive home.

I just can't be a**ed with them anymore

I've posted this story before on PH but not on this forum.

I was sitting in nose to tail traffic in a previous car (997S) and an idiot in a Shogun kept pulling up to within an inch of my bumper, it was dark and raining heavily and I was concerned enough to change lanes. He followed me across and continued to do it. I changed back and he came back with me and carried on, I was getting seriously p*ssed off with it. When the traffic cleared he sat right behind me doing 50 so close that I couldn't even see his headlights. After a couple of miles I came up a steep hill quite close to where I live so I just let the car naturally slow on the hill. Eventually I came to a complete stop and the moron is still one inch behind me. I got out, walked back to his car, he wound down the window and started yelling abuse (as did his horrendous wife in the passenger seat) then on a complete whim I stuck my hand through the window, turned his keys and pulled them out, then I threw them as hard as I could into the cemetery of the Church next to us (it's pitch black and raining remember!), he just stared slack jawed and I walked back to my car and drove off! I heard the abuse start again but I was already pulling away. He was a big sod and I really don't know how I didn't get a smack in the mouth but it was hugely satisfying. Never saw him again.

Funny, this, 'was going to post something very similar the other day. Only down side was in my attempt to put some distance between me and idiot, I almost drove up the back of another idiot who decided to pull across all 3 lines after joining the motorway, doing about 40mph.

Ultimately it would have been my fault and easy headlines to write.

Usually it's just people in mundane cars just trying to take a look...

...Otherwise the people with something to prove in my own personal experience have all driven BMW's and Audi's!

The most dangerous example along the lines you describe though was some c**k in a new V8 Jaguar who clearly had something to prove, trying to overtake a Lamborghini Diablo, Modified Toyota Supra (silly bhp) and a Lotus Esprit GT3 (also bodified to silly bhp) and our mate we were following at the front in a huge American A-Team style van, all in one hit...

Had someone attempt to cut me up on a Motorway island to beat me to an exit and then proceed to undertake me on the slip road when the first attempt failed and he was in a Renault Scenic and I was driving Lady Slackers ML320 CDI. I just tapped the loud pedal and he was history but he still came past about 5 miles later though and then got off at the next junction.

The other day I was in the AMG and going up a hill a Skoda Fabria was a little to close so I accelerated just a touch (I was turning right a little further up) just to open a small gap and he floored it to stay on my bumper. They just do not know what it is like to have a decent amount of power and think because they keep up with you it is irrelevant. The fact that you do not floor it is not something that they consider. If they floor it then they speed up a bit if you floor it it is like hitting the hyperspace button and the traffic ahead suddenly is a lot closer.

I think the AMG is quite discrete so god knows what it must be like to be in a Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari when they are (lets face it) less than subtle.

I love the story about chucking the keys always wanted to try that one.

Just remembered another one - I was out for a hoon with Jay in his Elise, doing some of the pre-Kent-hoon route...

Some idiot in a fiesta iirc saw Jay come past him and pulled out to give chase, not noticing the F*ing great Lamborghini accelerating hard behind him!

His car's performance was not modified (or if it was,m not enough to give it any power) and he just constantly got in the way... Pulling out in every space where he could *just* hedgehop one car, where I could have passed the lot.

The pikey roadblock got in the way between us for about 5-10 miles...

I think I'll remember the 'keys trick' wink

Slightly different spin on this (no pun intended) I just wanted to thank the owner of the yellow Lambo who made my day on Sunday. Having just left the GT racing at Silverstone I was making reasonable progress in my Exige when I spotted the beauty in my rearview mirror. I wasn't too sure how long he had been there as rear vision is not too good in an Exige, but I dutifully pulled over to be fanfared by 12 cylinders of joy. I have to admit to catching up at the roundabout and trying to stay within earshot just to hear that sound, but was clearly left floundering. A moment to remember.

I admit I once overtook stupidly ( whilst in the G) but not til I realised it was too late. It was safe to overtake this BMW M5 as it was clear roads and I was following ducatiGary in his Schimitar to a meet so I over took to get behind him and then he turned off so I had to brake in front of this BMW and do a sharp left turn which I only just pulled off with some amazing sliding. I still feel bad to this day for trying to prove a point. If that was you BTW sorry.

Last weekend, out in my Vantage V8, some plonker in a Nissan pickup truck undertakes me while braking and pulling away from a set of traffic lights on the A1. Then sits in front of me until the the road widens, then proceeds to cause havoc at a roundabout. Me, I'd just had a nice lunch and was driving home slowly.

A year or so back was out on an A road giving it some. Road is empty (early Sunday morning), dry, no junctions ahead, no traffic ahead, no laybys for the law to lurk in. A kid in a vauxhall nova started to tailgate me at speed. I put the foot down and pulled away, then pulled into the left lane and slowed down to allow him to pass, I did not want to be implicated in a crash. He tucked in behind me. After a while I pulled back out and put my foot down. This happened twice - same thing happened. I then pulled back into the left lane and slowed down to about 30 mph. Then he got the hint and went away - throwing w-anchor signs all the way.

Could I have pulled away?? Hell yeah, I was in a 997 C2S, he was in an E-reg vauxhall nova. And if he follows me and has a blow out and crashes and burns would I have that imprinted in my brain?

It's not about you - it's all about that person in their little car and the chip on their shoulder. Just to be clear - having a nice car does not make one a good person any more or less than having a cheap car makes someone a bad person. But male ego seems to kick in and people act as though their self esteem is tied up with how fast they can drive. Muppets!

Breathe deep and relax.

You have a supercar and he/she drives a crapbox. It's just one of those things.

Couple of years ago I was in my Gallardo when 2 chavs in a beemer bristling with Halfords finest almost takes the nose off the car cutting me up at a roundabout. I admit the red mist descended somewhat and I gave chase. After a relative amble through a village we hit the open B road beyond. The beemer spat smoke and took off with 1 chav doing the Maxwell House hand shuffle at me through the rear window. If I was sensible I would have backed off and left them but I knew they would just slow down. So instead I gave chase. Impressively they reached quite a speed as they tried to lose me. Three corners later dry roads changed to wet and I backed off. Rear window chav waving a bird with each hand at me. Rounding the next corner I watched a spectacular slide by the beemer which the driver could not catch. He first hit the left verge, drove along it as the pendulum rear swung the otherway. He hit a gulley on the verge which made the beemer literally take off, bounce in the middle of the road, take off again and land nose first at about 30 degrees into the right hand ditch. I have never seen so much mud sprayed up by a car. At first I laughed, then stopped to help them out of the car. They were shaken but fine - luckily.

Chavs, know your limits. My fault to some extent though. Just wish I had a video camera mounted :-)

My 996 is a bit of an old lady now, but I do love her so.

A few weeks ago driving over Chelsea Bridge I was stopped in a line of traffic.

Fat boy in white van with ugly fat biffer wife leans out of the winow, points at me, and shouts "st car...."

I waited until the traffic moved off, and as soon as I had a clear run away, I wound down the window, pointed and shouted, "st wife, st life..."

Teh cab driver behind me nearly p155ed himelf and clapped me at the next junction.

Coonts.

They drive a stbox, you drive a supercar.

Nevermind.
