Hi guys im new to the scooby scene ,, a few weeks ago a bought a import wrx 1998, now im looking at tuning ££££ lol ,. before i spent any money i took it so santa pod for usc 2008 and some how the car managed to run 13.2 @ 98 mph second 1/4 mile (60 ft time was 1.7) i was very happy with that, and even more happy when i got home and back to work i lifted the car on a ramp and noticed that the exhaust was bodged and was actually a 1" after the first cat then back to 2 1/2 system lol,, thats now changed to 3",, i have also just fitted a a boost gauge as i wanted to see how the boost was and the answer is it hits full boost 16psi then drops off straight away to 14 psi then holds to the red line,
do you think its been chipped , mapped or anything else i have no idea what power its got etc ,

I want more power tho lol what mods do you think id need next as i said im new to scoobys .

cheers guys jeff.

Boost is high for a standard wrx. Suggest it might have been chipped.

Hi mate,

If it hasnt been re-mapped and you have already replaced the exhaust and lost the standard cat then a re-map is the first step. If it has already had a new system and been mapped then your probably talking a new turbo and another re-map, fuel pump and possibly larger injectors.

You probably need to get it on a rolling road first and see what she is producing against standard. Standard BHP on a classic WRX all depends on weather it is a UK car or JDM. Im not sure about the JDM but i think the standard uk wrx is about 205bhp depending on the year IIRC. Those figures sound like its running more than standard BHP though.

Good luck with it and happy spending!!!biggrin

Sounds like boost spiking from being decatted. They should peak and hold approx 13 to 14psi give or take the accuracy of your gauge. (0.9 bar)

I really doubt it's remapped because the 1997 and 1998 ECUs were difficult to do anything with, meaning fitting a PowerFC (or even a nasty piggyback thing) was MUCH cheaper and easier. This sort of mod is quite hard to miss!!

The boost control on the 1997 to 2000 WRXs is not ideal - it's a "controlled leak" type 2 port solenoid and they can be tempremental.
Check that there is still a restrictor in one of the hoses going to the solenoid and that it hasn't got bunged up with oil. With a bit of experimentation with restrictor size, it's possible to get the boost to be stable. (Think along the lines of drilling carb jets wink )

Power should be around the 270 area for a decatted JDM WRX. (There was NO UK spec WRX until 2001)

Definately beeing played with. It should be around 0.6-0.8 bar as standard which about 9psi.

If not remapped for the reasons metntioned above, it might have a bleed valve or some other manual boost device. Have a good check over the car and see if anything looks odd.

I forgot they dropped the boost in 97/98 - got thinking about my old Scoob...

But surely 0.8 bar is approx 11.5psi?
