Please don't teach, or indeed allow, your children to use the phrase [tellytubbyvoice]uh oooooohhhhh[/tellytubbyvoice].

For your information, it is neither cute nor funny. It makes your children sound retarded, and is EXTREMELY annoying to those unfortunate enough to be within earshot.

No one, we've had friends over for the weekend and I've just spent the whole time listening to this bloody phrase. It's bad enough when children are using it almost constantly, but when the parents join in I just want to hurt things. This was made worse by having to endure this chorus whilst eating my Sunday Lunch in my favourite pub. Bloody gave me indigestion in the end.

Nasty meaningless phrases are illogically annoying, so I've some sympathy with the OP.

I was in my local fish and chip shop on friday evening and whilst awaiting my haddock to be cooked, in walked a seemingly nice looking forty-something well-spoken middle class woman. She made her request for a small cod and chips by opening her sentence with the hideous words "Can I get...". Grrr, what a stupid pig ignorant bh! I was appalled and whilst recovering from the shock of hearing such a vile phrase, ten seconds later in walked another similar woman who strolled to the counter and said; yes you've guessed it... the weasel-faced cow had all nasty blue veins running down her neck and I had a barely controlable urge to grab her by the back of the head and smash her stupid ugly face through the glass of the hot cabinet and into a red hot Pukka pie (chicken and mushroom). Then I was going to get hold of the original woman and inflict an act of severe VBRJ over the fruit machine; that would have learnt them some manners. Of course instead I just stood there and did nothing.

Anyway, if ever there was a phrase that annoys me more than "can I get" I've yet to hear it. It's so blood rude and stupid; no you can't fking get it, I can get it though and if you want it you can fking well ask me properly. bds.

You could get the Govt to force me to take one Neil! smile

Of course, I fictionally over-dramatised my reaction for the expediency of making the point. But the woman did have all horrid blue neck veins, like on a cock, and the thought of it put me off my haddock. And can-I-get is really pretty crass isn't it.

Accourding to my sister in law who is a speach therapist in a top hospital in London this helps for knowing sounds when it comes to speech with phonetic sounds! It is highly important and teaches children alot! You don't have children yourself do you, when you do the phonetic sounds are the best to teach 1st and the most important. (don't worry I hated the telly tubbies too!! Grated on my nerves!! But it was important apparently!) So if the blue veined woman had listened to telly tubbies would she be able to speak properly! Sorry I was taught "please may I have"!

I understand about the use of phonetics in teaching speech (I used to teach many years ago) but repeating the Telly Tubbies Uh Ooh sound all the time will not help speech development. There is also a risk with this approach, if it is not done properly, that children then struggle to learn the correct pronunciation of a word.

I have to also point out that given the telly tubbies have been around for 10 years now, we've hardly seen an explosion of erudite communicative youngster have we?
