How do I know what bits to buy?

Hi

I've got a Dawes Discovery 701.

So far its been the worst bike that I have ever owned. (It makes me cry my old 1970’s super galaxy was amazing and this is worse than the old raleigh bikes I had as a child)

However on Friday the crank finally fell off and could not be reattached.

So I would like to buy a set of pedals and the bit in-between them!

I want them to have never been touched by a modern Dawes engineer! How do I find out what shimanio parts to buy that will fit my bike?
