Are there any straight cars on there? We've been looked at cars to buy for a company car (that we can also use as everyday cars). Replied to 3 different cars, a X5, a Touareg and a M3. They all came back with the same generic email.
Something along the lines of...yes the car is exactly as described but i'm out of the country at the minute, couldn't afford the import duty etc but if you'd like to send me £7K then i'll get the car delivered...honest!
Grrrrrr!

I do think it could do wit some stricter rules for putting them up. As I;ve seen this as well.
Agreed. Maybe 100 posts for starters? We certainly don't want scammers lurking in PH.Just a different way to approve it. I'm not smart enough or geeky enough to know about internet approvals.

Well no as I didn' think it was just for PH members.
There are no 'members'; it's not a club, but a forum.elster said:

What can you do? Ask them 'Are you honest?'PHers generally have a self-policing code of conduct. I swapped lenses worth hundreds of pounds by post - I posted him mine, he posted me his. No problem, but you wouldn't do it on eBay.
OK, perhaps it's a brotherhood!
So some way of ensuring advertisers are within this way of thinking is needed - forum posts are a good pointer. Or maybe if they aren't posters then they should pay to advertise, or maybe the adverts should be flagged in some way, eg: 'Not PHer, may be dodgy!

i agree the vetting process could be stricter, but if i were to buy a car through PH classifieds - particularly something rare or expensive to run/fix - i'd post in the relevant forum on here first to see if anyone knew the car and its history.
the guys who post regularly in the M power & barge bargain threads [L100NY, ASBO etc.] are good at spotting fakes, scams and dodgy motors a mile off, as are the guys on the marque specific threads. if anything about an ad looks suspicious, you can be sure a seasoned PHer can offer advice.

Where else are you going to look? Autotrader? eBay? They have just as many problems with scammers and time wasters.
I don't think i'd buy one off ebay (unless it was close enough to view first) and i've never had any problem with Autotrader, i must be one of the lucky ones. Its not just sellers. I received the below email today about my 928 I have for sale on here

If the scammers could be filtered off, it would be a great.
what do we do if we suspect a scam ad then? if the mods/webmasters can be made aware then at least they can pull all other ads from that IP address [i'm guessing there will be multiple ads per scammer]. need something akin to the 'report abuse' button on the forums.
