Just bought a couple of L series lenses, 24-105 and 70-200, both 77mm thread. What filter would you recommend for lens protection - any particular brand?

For protection I'd reccomend lens hoods...for filters I'd go for a circular polariser and some grads. Lee and B&W would be my choice.

Cokin, save your wedge you wont notice any difference

As for UV filter, stuff that, just use the lens hood and insurance

Thanks for advice guys, looks like Cokin will be the option, I have the lens hoods already. N

Typical, Cokin don't seem to do the 77mm filters (warehouseexpress). Hoya have 77mm SHMC PRO1-D UV for £40 or Skylight 1B for £35 - is the UV one better?

I use the Hoya Pro1-d filters as well smile

The skylight filter will be slightly tinted, i'd go for the UV filter.

Cheers.

Cokin filters won't work with the lens hood, unless you reverse the hood biggrin

£40 goes a long way towards insuring your gear.

I don't bother with protection myself, just settle for a lens hood and being careful. wink

What do you all think of Canon brand filters? I bought a Canon 77mm UV haze filter with my 17-40mm f/4L lens. Seems to be ok, but I really purchased it for protection and a little weather-proofing.

Neil - I also use a 40D, and am currently torn between the 24-150 f4.0L and the 17-55 f2.8 as my primary lens. Am interested to know whether you considered the 17-55 in your decision process at all, as I note you covered off your motorsport/longer focal range options with the excellent 70-200mm?

Until you unwittingly have some grit on your t-shirt from dust and you rub it across your £1000+ lens....

I'll stick with the filter smile

The 70-200 is excellent but it is heavy to lug around all day and not so good for some of the smaller tracks where you get close access to the action - like many of the sprint circuits in Scotland. The 24-105 is excellent for that. I did buy a 50mm f1.4 on advice from FPC - great for the detailed shots.

I rarely use filters, but recently went to a big party and decided to risk taking the camera. I put filters on each lens, which was just as well as after a few sherries I realised I had a lens cap in my pocket which belonged to the 70-200 which I'd put back in the bag...

I use Hoya Pro slim and B+W.
