They _so_ should use it in F1 these days

It was hardly EVER used for F1. It was too punishing for the cars. Only used a couple of times in the 50s and in 1960 and 61. Racing on the banked track stopped completely in 1969.

It's now in too much a state of disrepair to be used.

But Indianapolis is banked. I've a track day there the Monday after the GP.
Toying with buying a Playstation just so that I can learn the circuit.

Indianapolis is also about twice as wide as Monza and is only banked at 9-12 degrees max. Whereas the Monza banking is 38 degrees. If you have a copy of Nascar on the PC start it up and go to Bristol, the banking their is 36 degrees and it's only a 1/2 mile oval where the cars barely break 100mph. At the Monza banking a modern car would be doing well over 200mph.

Indy cars have traditionally always been beefier than F1 cars.

With the odd exception, Grands Prix have not been run on banked circuits. Even pre-war the only banked tracks GP cars raced on were Montlehry and AVUS. The legacy of GP racing is derived from racing on closed down public roads so, even today, tracks are still built with that "notion" in mind.

When the Italian GP was run on the banked Monza in 1960, the British teams boycotted the race on the grounds that the track was not safe. In 1961 they used the banked track again and there was a serious accident which claimed the life of Von Trips and 14 spectators. Ironically, the accident happened on the normal part of the circuit (on the long run down to Parabollica).

The GP never returned to the banked track. The last ever race held on it was in 1969 since when it has been allowed to gently decay.

The Von Tripps accident was triggered by Jim Clark unfortunately, but he wasn't to blame.

Avus....now there's some serious banking. They still run over where it used to be (dismantled in the 50's IIRC) on the touring car races held there (are they still?)

Well, the Monza banking remains near the start/finish straight (where the old track goes to the right) but does the rest of it still remain?

Could it be possible in the future for them to resurface it and use it again?

Playing a race on the Monza banking is good fun in GPL, cant seem to last more than a few laps though before crashing into one of the other racers!

Great track

Which version do you have? Mine's the old NASCAR3, but it's good enough to make you think very hard indeed! Those are very big cars, and it's sooo easy to nudge the others. Certainly taught me to respect the NASCAR drivers.

I've got all 4 versions of Nascar. Only missing the Legends version that was sold in the US.

Then of course, we had Brooklands, which was banked, REALLY BANKED!

Maybe they should just ditch the chicanes at Monza now and keep the rest of the current track. Can you imagine the slipstreaming you'd have on the run down to turn one then?!! Whayhey!

Back to 1971 then.

Sadly, slipstreaming would probably not be possible because of the efficient aerodynamics of modern F1 cars - especially the downforce generated by the front wings.

Doesn't matter in a straight line. It would be fantastic. Put the second Lesmo back to how it was about 10 years ago (i.e almost flat in 5th gear) instead of the tight corner it is now

Always amazed me they continued to run races around Avus - seem to recall Luis Krages (aka John Winter) having an enormous fireball accident there in the DTM, and sadly it's where Keith Odor was killed in a STW race - lots of questions over that crash too, as it took the track emergency services an age to get to him. Very sad.

Think the French touring cars used a portion of the Monthlery banking a few years ago.

The Montlhery banking has also been used in recent years for the historic "Tour de France" (for cars). Using the combined banking and road course.
