355 for summer
Discussion
Hello there. Given that many F355s are used predominantly as an indulgence for high days and holidays, I was wondering how many owners effectively garage them for winter.
Reason for asking is that with a bit of hard work and a following wind I may soon be within touching distance of being able to afford my dream 355 spider. However, the plan would be to retain the E39 5 as a daily driver and garage the Ferrari during winter. What I'm wondering specifically (as a non-mechanical type) - is it significantly detrimental to the cars to leave them static for an extended period? Save for flat-spots in the tyres, what other things might I need to consider?

It is never a good idea to lay up a car for the whole of winter. Although I didnt really use mine in the winter, I did try and make sure that on the occasional dry day it did go for a spin. Usually managed a couple of times a month. At the very least the engine was run every two weeks.
Other precautions; hand brake off (so it doesnt seize on) and battery conditioner.

yes, driving it is best. I had mine out half a dozen times in January, just make sure there is no salt on the roads. Winters aint what the used to be bla bla etc etc etc . A battery conditioner (essential) and a dehumidifier (nice to have) should be considered. I erected a small tent around mine in the garage and stuck in an electric greenhouse heater. It was far more comfortable than I was.
I've kept my E36 M3 as a daily (ie my other occasional car when I dont feel like taking the 355) however, barring salt on the roads, I fully intend to use the 355 year round. I am really looking forward to a clear crisp winters day and blatting around the countryside (keeping the eyes peeled for ice).
I don't have power in the garage so battry conditioner isn't an option so in the event I go away for an extended period, I will have to rely on the isolator switch instead and maybe a jump pack. Not that I have years of Ferrari experience to draw upon, but all my cars have been happier when driven and serviced regularly rather than left to stand for long periods and I would expect the 355 to be the same.
ETA: If you can get the cash together, it is simply one of the best purchases you will make. SOOOOOO much fun!

There are a variety of solar powered 12v chargers around. With a bit of tinkering you could mount the panel outside the garage (or at the window if u have one) and run the lead to the battery. No mains required.Maplin have a good selection.

sadly, nearest window is about 12ft away in the next bay over. I have 2 bays right in the corner with no window access. Bugger. Thank you though, as I had no idea you could get solar ones. could prove very handy if we move and I encounter similar problem.Maplin have a good selection.
