I'm looking to spend a few days somewhere with my good lady and I've never really been to Dumfries and Galloway so was wondering what it's like from a relaxing 20-something's mini break point of view...

Anyone care to recommend somewhere that isn't going to break the bank?

Thanks,

Fruitcake

Really depends what you like. It's a corner of Scotland that most people drive straight past, so it's quiet - nice, if unspectacular, scenery, decent roads. Mrs Y and I often go there for a day trip. So if you like peace and quiet, try it - if you're a party, party type - give it a miss.

I'd recommend:

- David Coulthard Museum (http://www.davidcoulthardmuseum.co.uk)
- Visit the Hydro-electric plant nearby - was quite interesting when I went a few years ago so I imagine it still is so.

smile.

i went many years ago and stopped in drummore which is south of stranraer very near the tip of the peninsula. i visited Port Patrick which was a lovely coastal village on the west. i also visited garlieston on a separate occasion but found this very very remote. if you are into books there is a village called Wigtown and there is loads of book shops there! think there is a distillery near there you can visit too.

Stayed near Dumfries for a few days in my motorhome a couple of weeks back, in a mini tour of Scotland.......Very nice part of the world, pretty quiet but scenic... can recommend a trip to Castle Douglas, if you like wandering down a traditional busy "high street", with plenty of interesting shops.....Ayr is only an hour away for a decent day out..............You can even see where the original "The Wickerman" was filmed.......smile

Thanks for the replies.

We're not (and for that read 'I'm not') really "let's go clubbing" sort of people - we just want somewhere we can relax for a bit.

Oh, and my girlfriend just read that bit about the hydro-electric power station and said "are you taking the piss".

So that's where we'll be going if we do go there hehe

Like the time I took her to the tank museum. Oh what a day that was...

The engineering that went into it is impressive, and was very interesting IMO - and I hate engineering! It's a great design. Maybe not yours (and definately not her) thing though I guess.

I'm not going back there EVER since they banned me for speeding.

Watch out on the A74(M) by the way. Glorious road, rigorously enforced..

Oh, no it's definately mine. I went, as I said, to the tank museum because it was all kinds of tracked machinery assembled in a big shed. What more could you want? As a forefeit, she then made me go and see moneky world or some similar crap. Unbeknownst to me, it was right around the corner banghead

I'll keep you updated if we do go to D&G.

I've stayed in Kircudbright a couple of times.

Nice area - I'd recommend the DC museum (as mentioned earlier)

Also, the "Raiders Road" forest drive is good - you can drive through the forest and stop at various points (Loch Doon IIRC) and The Otter Pools etc.

Wigton is great of you like books, it's full of second hand book shops (we spent ages there wink)

Mull of Galloway lighthouse is cool - I'd try and stay on the Mull - there are a few choices for cottages to rent

You can then go up the coast past Ailsa Craig (sp?) to Turnberry etc - also Croy Brae / electric brae is quite odd - it's one of those optical illusion hills that were thought to be magnetic as it appears that your car rolls uphill wink

HTH - if I have...

What occupies the site of Wigtown if you are not into books? Is it just blank or is there another village called something else which does not have bookshops?

Good if you like golf! smile

Wigtownshire GC is a really good links course. Portpatrick is a challenge (bit more expensive) as is Stranraer.

We stay in a place called Shennanton House near Newton Stewart which is really nice. There's a distillery near too which is worth a visit!
