As the title says I need some recommendations please. My 5 year old bulldog died suddenly earlier this year and we are now thinking of getting another dog.

There are no kids in the house or other pets and while Mrs alfa and I work my parents live close by and will let the dog out and spend some time with him.Mrs alfa is also home 1-2 days during the week as well so he would have some company each day and every evening. He would live indoors but we have an enclosed garden and live near to a park for exercise.

The problem is what breed to go for.

I love bulldogs for their character(similar to me both in looks and character)but I'm reluctant to have another partly due to health issues but mainly because my last dog was so special.

Mrs alfa is not impressed with my suggestion of a bullmastiff of french mastiff as too big, while i'm not impressed by her suggestion of a shih tsu.

So any advice ?
Labs, spaniels and collies are out as they are not my sort of dog character wise. Can a man be seen walking a pug?

rehome a greyhound.

They are health breed which aren't very needy for attention.

Japanese Spitz. Clean, healthy, don't need enormous amounts of exercise.

Another vote for a Boxer here, although make sure you find a good breeder.

Go to a local dog rescue centre and give what I am sure will be a lovely home to a dog that really needs it?

sod the size and get a Ridgeback - can be used as a large pillow/draught excluder for a garage. Size will be no-no from 'her indoors' though, I know that's the reason my wife won't let me have one

Newfoundland, the softest, loveable lump you will ever find (they also have quite a thick head). Initially I was against getting a dog so big but Mr Fraggle was set on it and in all honesty you really don't notice the size

Agreed - the breed doesn't really matter, also : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7569064.stm

We have a Basset hound, great dog enjoys a good walk and a play. But knows how to sleep in front of the fire. Strong, robust dog but not that tall to get in the way.
