Olu Deniz - the most beautiful beach in Turkey
From last Sunday's Observerhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/aug/17/turke...
I have been to several Turkish resorts and this really is their jewel. Lots of trips and things to do, or just lay on the beach. Paragliding is a massive local sport.
Then if you fancy sampling abit of Turkish life head for nearby Fethiye for local food. Take a credit card too - when she sees how cheap high quality jewellery is there, you'll be buying Christmas presents for the next four years!

Thx all
Would people go for Olu Deniz over a place in cyprus (which ever best)?
Cyprus can be quite chavvy and is suffering a terrible drought at the moment. There are a few really nice boutique hotels on Cyprus, but all seem to be parked next to a dreadful old-school Med hotel. So only nice if you never leave the resort.Would people go for Olu Deniz over a place in cyprus (which ever best)?
Look up the Oyster and Jade Residences in Olu Deniz - small boutique hotels (though cheaper than a Travelodge) and the closest to the beach of all hotels in the town
Dalyan Delta IMHO - mud baths, turtles, old rock tombs and quiet unspoilt areas. Dammit, probably not now everyone will want to go there!
Tempted to go myself in October as we have 2 weeks with nowhere to go.
Marmaris - it's not great apart from the market which is hilarious 'Cheaper than Tesco or Oxfam' is the usual cry, and the Turkish Baths I went to (no idea where they were as I assume there's more than one).

Dalyan is definitely my second favourite. Loses out only because it's not right on the beach. But benefits like Olu Deniz from being a preservation area: so no buildings above 2 storeys etc.Edited by V8mate on Tuesday 19th August 12:23

Olu Deniz is lovely but its all a bit too new and glossy for me. I've just come back from Kalkan (about 30 mins further down the road) and thats a bit more rustic... or Kas about another 30mins further along - both BEAUTIFUL! get out and see some of the ancient sites, you can't fail to be impressed. I love the place.Hire a car too if you can, I did something like 1500Kms in two weeks - just take a bit of care when driving at night
PS: if you want the best in Turkey book with Simply Travel.

if going to Olu Deniz, do I search Olu Deniz as a resort to stay on holiday price checkers?
What kind of hotel do you want?I booked directly with the local agent by email - he covers most of th local hotels and organised all transfers etc.

I went to Patara many, many years ago, which was a lovely beach with a really cute little town but I think Patara town fell into complete disrepair. Kalkan is down the road which is a good town with lots of nice restaurants but doesn't have a beach.
Olu D0eniz sounds ideal.
Kalkan is excellent. Short drive to beautiful Patar beach, and the Roman (and earlier) ruins there are stunning. Can get a dolmus there rather than drive.Olu D0eniz sounds ideal.
In Kalkan, great restaurants (try Ali Baba's or the one two doors away advertising Abbra Kadir the magician - great fun).
Also, lok up Muddy Boat down at the pier and take a day trip with the owner Faith. Top bloke; will snorkel with a harpoon gun and catch your lunch for you.
Sh!t. I miss it!

tpit I have ever visited. Any place where 50% of bars have Roy Chubby Brown on loop is to be avoided IMO. Izmir is much nicer though :-)
was an awesome (if bumpy) road.
