Right, got an idea.

Pop Idol, X-Factor etc. They get thousands of hopefuls singing for a career and fame. We do actually find talent on these shows, albeit I hate the circumstances.

However, what about an Olympic version? Where the winner(s) could ulimately be part of our Olympic asperations for 2012?

Thousands of competitors dashing 100m, coaches picking out talent, it would give them massive scouting opportunities. Obviously you'd get some retard who thinks he's the next Linford rolling down in 20 seconds (much like that cock who sang Barbie Girl) but the end result could be beneficial for the country, not just one persons' fame and fortune.

What do you thinkg

You have to qualify for the trials, usually through attaining a qualifying time in the year previously. Taking someone with talent off the streets next month could be soon enough for them to be ready for the 2016 Olympics. Anyone going for 2012 already needs to be in the sport.

I understand what you're saying, but I am sure there are people out there with the raw talent to mix it. Especially in something like the 100m. You're either st hot fast or you ain't.

I did a 12.56s at school, and was one of the quickest, but one lad was much quicker than me, doing a sub 12 (not bad at 16) I bet he's even quicker now (I've played footy with him) but he's never took a step on a track or put on a pair of spikes. Is it possible with 3 years training to get to world standard?

I bet a lot of petty thieves in city areas could run the socks off a lot of poor athletes wink

he wouldn't have time for the steroids to get out of his system after he was "built" up to world standard for the 2012 games.

ok, so looks like this was a crap idea.

I just thought there might be some gifted natural athlete out there somewhere, was thinking of a way to find them.

To be fair, I suspect a lot of sports bodies in the UK are scratching their head in the same way. It sounds like lottery money is helping - Shanzay whatserface was a cyclist from "the streets" before she was picked up by British Cycling. I'm sure the great success in this olympics plus the glow around 2012 will see a lot more people giving olympic sports a go rather than just football, having babies or knifing.

Unfortunately sub-12 at 16 doesn't even put you in the top 250 in the country this year. 277= place (lots of them) is 11.7s. Rankings can be found here www.athleticsdata.com

I think he did 11.9 or something, this was on a school field (grass) with no spikes or blocks (I had spikes) were the figures in the rankings from field runs with no blocks and no spikes?

He was encouraged to go for country trials but didn't want to.

There you go, he had the opportunity needed. I'm sure the local athletics club would have welcomed him too. You can have all the talent in the world but if you don't want to use it, there's nothing anyone else can do.

The opportunities exist already, people just need to grasp them.
