Re-Starting topic, Tyre recomendations for off road frontera

Re-Starting because i put it in WIKI .Question: Whats the largest size tyres that can be fitted to a 98 Frontera for say 50/50 off road use , also any tyre recomendations.
I tow a burger van and i am getting fed up of being towed out of muddy apres festival fields... Need serious rubber. Help Please...

I assume you are using 4wd mode???

Better tyres will help, but towing anything can make progress almost impossible under certain conditions. I guess selection the best possible location to get moving again is a must where possible.

Having some waffle boards to aid traction might be an idea.

I dont' have much experience with a Frontera off road, although the one I have driven I found struggled, even compared to Land Rovers on comparable tyres. I don't feel the 4wd setup on the Frontera was really upto the task.

As for tyres, well remember anything agressive enough to make any odds in the mud will have a negative affect on the road, as in less grip (wet/dry), more noise, might pplunt performance and increase mpg.

Having said all that, I've run plenty of LR's on off road biased tyres no problem. It's just a heads up.

Personally I think the limited gains you'd see off road with All Terrain tyres probably won't be worth it. I'd go for some mild mud terrains, they should be quite usable on road but offer huge gains in the mud.

If you really want an A/T then the BFG All Terrains are probably your best bet, although they are heavily biased to off road for an all terrain. Not so good on wet tarmac but I've been quite impressed with their off road ability.

Moving onto something more meaty, I'd look at BFG Mud Terrains or Cooper SST. If you want cheaper then look to some of the remoulds (Bronco 4x4, Calway, Greenway).

I've found the Bronco Amazon or Greenway Macho to be quite a good on road tyre with superb off road abilty. Probably would be my choice if you wan sacrifice some on road ability.

I'd probably avoid Goodyear MTR's. While a capable tyre on some terrain I've always been deeply dissappointed with their mud performance.

If you want something a bit more extreme looking maybe have a look for some Insa Turbo Special Track 2

As for size, not really sure what fits a Frontera, but if you stick to similar diameter and width to stock you should be fine.

great off road and still retains very good road manners. I run BFG MTs, but would run KL71s if i wasn't off road quite so much!

Depending on experience, some offroad training? I've seen a lot of road biased shod 4x4s get stuck in slightly sloppy grass fields, often not helped by their drivers.

I'd suggest that you go for a narrower, more aggressive version of your present size - e.g. if you have 235 / 70 T 16 fit 205 R 16. Check with a tyre fitter that the rims are suitable. The key to traction is ground pressure - on a wet grassy site you need a tyre that will cut through the grass to find grip on the soil below. I'd suggest a narrow MT pattern such as Colway MT or any narrow tyre with a square shoulder profile. I agree with the previous post about Good Year MT/R - they have a round shoulder profile and the shoulder lugs aren't widely spaced enough to be great on greasy surfaces. Similarly I think that the Kumho KL71 might not be available in a narrow enough size to suit your application.

Have you thought about fitting snow chains until you get off th field.
