So I have decided that I have to sell my JZR, unfortunately its just too impractical and I dont have enough money to run two cars at the moment.

Whilst giveing her a good old valet over the weekend I sat back on a tea break and started thinking about what type of engine I would like in my next 'practical' kit....

I realy want an engine thats going to be the heart of my car, some people demand ultimate grip, others want the best 0-60 in the area. I want any of the above, but mainly is got to sound great and put a smile on my face every time. Like my old 2CV with loud half silenced pipes! So, my thoughs went along the lines of...

Honda Vtec - Why have I never seen a build with one in?! Am I just too new on the scene or do I have my eyes shut half of the time? I would have thought every man and his dog would be banging them into old westies to replace Pintos and other ageing units. Honda build quility and a 9k scream to the limiter, whats the catch?

Big Ducati Twin - Haveing spent a few nights this summer camped close to a pretty long tunnel on the shore of Lake Como in Italy, I want one in my life! Being woken up in the early hours to the godly noise of one thundering along still puts a smile on my face! The only new build with one is the (I think) MEV Rocket, whilst it seems a great bit of kit it realy doesnt light my fire. So why the exclusive use of Jap 4s in bike powerd kits? Iv seen a few other Morgan types with Boxer twins, Guzzi twins, but never in a 7type kit.

Volvo 5cyl - My bro in law has a new Focus ST. Whilst it not what I would go for, with a full aftermarket exhaust on it sounds fantastic! It pops, farts and spits flames, all very silly bit Im pretty sure something similar in a Caterfield would be a hoot! Anybody aware of a Volvo 5cyl build? As with the Vtec there surely must be enough of them kicking around cheapish?

So what im after realy is something safer that a JZR with all round better practicality. Im thinking along the lines of Westie, Fisher Fury, Marlin Sexi, Sylva Stylus. Im pretty sure that would prefer something without a screen/roof as well, just a helmet and a good roll cage!

Thanks to anybody who might be able to help!

Mitch.

The previous generation of engines e.g. D16, B16, B18, H22 all turn "backwards" compared to the vast majority of other manufacturers engines. If you want to use the engine in a front engined/rear drive configuration that poses an awkward problem (unless you enjoy going backwards very quickly!). For use in a mid engined RWD application they are fine though, and I've seen several such cars with these engines.

The crank in the newer engines (e.g. K20 & F20) turn in the conventional direction, which has made them more popular. There are quite a few 7 type cars with the 240PS S2000 engine and running gear, but the engine is both very tall (always a problem with a 7) and very expensive!

There is a guy on Locostbuilders that has a Volvo 5 cylinder turbo engine in his Locost, so it can be done.
