My ammeter continually reads max. When the engine is switched off it stays at max for a while and then drops to min. I have had it (quickly) checked and it not overchaging. Any idea's? A friend said it may well be the alternator even though its not over charging

Had a similar problem with oil pressure guage.
FSD when ignition was on, would return slowly to rest ignition off.
Open circuit.
Logic says it would stay at zero if open circuit, some guages do but not the wedge evidently. (280 with VDO)

1981/2 280i conv. My SW voltmeter thinks it is an ammeter! My car (from it's chassis no & the bible)should have coloured wires, relays inside etc,but must have been built from "bin ends" as it is all black wiring , relays under bonnet and SW not Smiths(?) instruments. I am an electrical ignoramus, I KNOW elecricity leaks out of a light socket when you switch it on and there is no bulb in it, but that's about all !!! Not much helpwith your problem. but I thought you'd like some sympathy! I went to Beaulieu too,got steering and suspension Cortina/Granny parts at v. good prices.£5 ball joints/£5 pr TRE.
