Hi guys,

My girlfriend's Focus has recently lost power 3 times (whilst on the motor twice and around town once). The engine is still on, but the revs hardly register at all. The engine warning light comes on too.

Turning off the engine, leaving it for a minute or two and everything seems ok enough to get home, and maybe drive for a week or two without it happening again.

She says as she drives it, occassionally she can feel a loss of power just for a split second, and that happens quite often, but a total loss of power has occurred just the 3 times.

So far its been recently serviced, had sparks and leads changed. A quick look on google and this seems to be a known/common issue, but with no real cure...

Can anyone offer any clear advice or explanation as to what might be the issue, as it's going to have to go back to the Ford garage, and I don't want to be given a whole bunch of excuses and reasons they can't find the problem, yet charge me a fortune for looking....

Cheers
James smile

Could it be the MAF sensor maybe? Best get it seen by a mechanic anyway and run a diagnostic test to work out why the management light comes on.

Are these losses of power occurring at the same M.P.H.?. If so I would suspect the Throttle Position Sensor might be at fault.

Hi Ive got a ford focus 1.4 lx 05 plate. i had the same problem with mine. But the engine management light started to flash, the more i drove the faster the light flashed until it was fully on all the time. Took it to the garage (still under warenty at the time) and they looked at it and it was the engine management sensour/system that had to be changed! hope this has helpd.

A friend at work has a 06 plate Focus 1.6, and last week suffered a similar type of problem. The engine warning light came on, and he had hardly any acceleration and he said it felt like it was 'backfiring'

He took it to the local garage and he was asked by the mechanic if he had recently steam cleaned the engine. When he asked why,the mechanic showed him that there was approximately an inch of water lying in where the spark plugs and leads where.(He had not cleaned the engine or driven through any water)

A day later he spoke to a RAC mechanic and he was told it was a common fault with the Focus. The RAC guy said that if the 'scuttle' was ever removed for any work, they never fit on right again and are not watertight. This allows water ingress, which lies on top of the engine and causes havoc with the engine management system.

He is still having ongoing problems with it and is waiting for the main dealer to look at it.

Regards
Dave

This problem is normally caused by the washer jets leaking onto the engine, its a known problem at Ford and i believe they have changed the design to stop it happining.

The scuttle problem is in regard to replacing the pollen filter (on mk1 Focus not seen it on a mk2) if the panel clips are broken then the passenger footwell fills with water.

My 1.6 has recently taken to this very light misfire coinciding with complete loss of speedo for maybe 5 to 30 seconds , completely random and at any speed .
