A few months back, 2 of my friends and I (2 girls, very fit) bought som tickets for the Leeds festival(weekend camping) on Ebay. We tried to get them through the usual way(official websites), but they had all sold out within like 30 mins or so. So we looked on Ebay, and low and behold there was loads on there for sale.

We came accross one guy who had loads of positive feedbacks for selling tickets and decided he would be the best choice. He had 100% feedback and about 70+ sales, he also has 24 tickets for sale. We bought 3 of them and he emailed and said that he couldnt take £630 in his paypal as he was comming to his limit and that a perosnal cheque would suffice. So we gave our money to one of the girl and she sent a cheque, he emailed us when he recieved it and said he would send them when he recived them(about 10 days before hand) and left feedback to say fast payer blah blah blah...

On friday we had not recived the tickets and emailed him to ask him where they were. sat, sunday went and no reply...

this was his reply

Hi, regarding these tickets i'm afraid I have some bad news. I got these sent to a friends house who didn't tell me he is on holiday. There is no way I am going to be able to get the tickets on time as he is away until Sunday. I can only apologise for the inconvenience caused and I will be refunding your money asap. I will send you a cheque tomorrow, unless you want me to do it in a bank transfer to speed things up.
We got this reply on monday and he said that he would put it in tuesday... But im panicing a bit now, as Im £210 down and dont want to even consider another Leeds ticket until I have the money back... Also, I doubt I have time to get another one now if I did have the money... If he is genuine he has bent me and my friends over as there is not enough time to get more tickets...

Also, I have checked his profile on ebay, and he is now unregistered....

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek

We have just been bent over have we not.

Also, Im possibly thinking that he has seen that they are going for alot more, they have been £300 each in some cases and has just sold them for more!!!

Ebay dont want to know as we didnt use Paypal!!!

What do we reckon???

give him time to refund the money. He might well have sold them to someone else for a higher profit, which is not nice but would still mean you would get your money back,

I cant see any reason for him emailing you back if he had done a runner.

Write a very nice email to the organisers, explaining your desire to attend, the nature of your terrible misfortune and your limited funds. You have a 1% chance of getting new tickets for the cost of a stamp, forget about it and get right back dealing with the issue at hand. Letters rarely work in this day and age, Id pop one in the post myself, fire and forget.

How far away is he? You had an address to send him a cheque.

You've sent a cheque, hence you have his name and address. I'd suggest you and a few mates pay a visit as a last resort.

Firstly try ebay. Find out why his account has been terminated.

They'll normally help out in circumstances like this. At least this can confirm suspicions.

If you get nothing helpful I can say that a trip to the police can be fruitful but long winded. I have investigated a couple of similar things and had positive results. Both by scarring chances into paying back cash to avoid court and prosecuting proper scammers. Can't help you now as not doing that sort of thing anymore.

I think you`ve been had, what were his other sales? i`ll bet it was probably small items that he has bought from himself in anticipation for fleecing youself and 23 others for tickets. When reading your post the thing that sent alarm bells off was his paypal account was near his limit, tosh! As others have said you have his address and name, report to the police and ebay...

+1 for being had.

never ever trust ebay for high value gig tickets unless they have a long history of seeling similar [100's of +ves, going back years]

if you do buy elsewhere, always collect in person. might be a pain to do so, but not nearly as painful as being out of pocket, watching it on tv

Sorry, think you've been done, but it might not be all doom and gloom.

He's got 24 tickets listed - presumably he used 6 credit cards because I'm sure you could only buy 4 per person? Anyway... he 'sells' each one for £210 (your figures) so he has 5k in the bank. Except he actually sells 10 times as many, so he has £50k in an account for a few months. Come cash in time he passes on a sob story to everyone bar the fortunates who actually bought his 24 tickets, if they exist. Plenty of interest from the 50k and a few pissed off interweb people. Back of fag packet maths shows a £2k return in interest for an ebay account and a few emails. Ebay shut him down, the end. You might get your money back if you involve plod but at the moment he's saying "sory, I fvcked up, you'll get your money back". As you say, Ebay won't care because you went outside Paypal. Your bank won't care much because you wrote a cheque, rather than have credit card protection. Don't forget you can't *really* complain because he isn't a legitimate ticket seller - the t&c's of the tickets (if they ever even existed) will have some blurb about them being non-transferrable and whatnot.

You have a name and address for more direct, personal action, but I think (hope!) you'll get your money back at some point with a "Really sorry mate". Unless of course they really have disapperaed in which case plod should be told because it's theft.

Hope you get it sorted.

Stop on the cheque will make no difference if it has been more than 6 days.

You can buy tickets on the door for Reading fest, so see no reason why you wouldn't be able to at Leeds if you so desired, just requires bit of queueing.

Good luck getting the money back, its people like that who give genuine sellers a bad name.

He might be genuine.
My mate sold a ticket for Leeds festival for double its worth as someone cancelled on him.

I have a relative who got dicked about by someone on Ebay, they left neg feedback, got hold of this persons address, phoned them up told them they were getting the police involved.
Then got her husband to phone up pretending to be a police officer and that they were going to pay her a visit if she hadnt returned the money. - Money was returned ina couple of hours.
Give him another 24 hours, then go round his house and take him out...

Sounds like a genuine reason to me, if he was bending you over he most probably wouldn't reply at all. He has probably been kicked off Ebay due to someone else complaining, it doesn't take many complaints to get suspended (he may not be permanently banned).

Ask him to do a CHAPS bank transfer, since he's offered.

you have no idea how long after a cheque has "cleared" can it be recalled by the Bank. They can also give details of the target bank acc too. Maybe not to you, but indirectly....
