Anyone had a Rat problem?

Came back from Hols on Monday evening. Tues morn, eldest is eating brekkie and suddenly shouts that he's seen a Rat in the back yard.... 5 Mins later, Wife see's small brown rat appearing from under neighbours fence, running alongside the wall and ducking under the fence again.

We have a cat and a dog, so never had much trouble with Roland Rat before.

Called the council, they sent the pest control man... he has a look, nowt in our garden/yard. I introduce to neighbour, he has a look and turns out it's coming from another neighbour's garden.

Introduce to other neighbour - they have a massive amount of decking - thinks they are living under there... suggests putting traps and poison down. Neighbours then announce they've caught 4 in the last week with a trap they'ed bought. Didn't want poison in case the rats die under the deck and smell.

I am so peed off;

1) they didn't tell us they had rats within 1 ft of our back yard - we have 3 little kids...
2) The Exterminator categorically stated that they should put poison down, as they were unlikely to catch anymore (apparently, they are smart enough to spot a trap - especially after a number have been caught)

On the plus side, I let the dog out for a tinkle at midnight, heard some squeeking and then I watched our cat catch a small rat last night - found the remains this morning, he'd had a late night snack on his head... they're facking quick aren't they!!

Should I say anything to neighbours? I think they thought I was being a bit interfereing, but frankly, I don't want rats in my back yard with my kids about..

Any thoughts?

Air rifle?
seriously we get rat problems from time to time
Put poison down and they disappear. If they come back same again.
Decking seems to be an ideal place for them though, one of many reasons I dislike it.

I have one of these for dealing with rats at my place. Cometa-300 with AGS scope. Powerful enough to cleanly kill.

Just a though, but if your cat is catching and eating them, or just eating dead ones, you don't want poison anywhere near it...

You can use it as an excuse to buy a gun or an air rifle, i'd love to be able to sit in my bedroom and shoot rats!

I have one of those. I find it to be very flimsy, especially round the sight mounting. I prefer my Dad's old Webley .22 Vulcan that I have 'borrowed' for some time now. It hasn't needed to be tuned in for 20 years. It's THAT good. Lovely piece of kit. Unless you're a rat/rabbit/chav.
In all seriousness though, if you absolutely MUST kill the rats, do it via clean shots to the head with an air rifle. Catapults like the Black Widow (which I also own) are extremely powerful (they have more kinetic energy behind them than most air rifles, if you use big muthafungling ball bearings like I do), but they aren't as swift or precise. Poison is slow and painful, as are traps.

Lordy, thanks for all the responses...

I've only seen one and it was a dead one that the cat had got...

Gun looks like it could be of use... do I need I licence?

Not for an air rifle that is under the legal limit of power.

Go see your local gunsmith and have a look at some.

If you get one do lots of target practice to zero the scope and ensure you hit the rat in the 'kill area' every time.

A word of warning if you do go down the poison route...
I had some tenants in one of my properties who were having problems with dead rats, and more importantly, the horrible fking smell!
To cut a long story short, the neighbours had rats in their garden, laid poison, the rats ate the poison, fell ill, and ran under my property to die...
Cue, decomposing rats, unbelievable smell, and MILLIONS of fat blue bottle flies.
My advice would be to try and shoot the c unt s.
