im thinking of getting a 1.6 focus 1999. was just wondering what kind of power output can i get from it for about a thousand pounds?
i know i could just wack a supercharger and intercooler on it for near 400-500 quid. but i was looking for smaller scale stuff like uprated injectors and throttle body and cam shafts, stuff like that.

Genuine question - why?
ST170s are so cheap nowadays you might as well get one of those and avoid modified car insurance premiums.
Anyway, in direct answer, the sigma engine is getting quite popular with kit car people now, so I suspect there are indeed a range of performance camshafts, remapped ECUs etc.

If you really want to modify your car and not buy and ST170 (better option) then for £1000 you are really going to get no where with the 1.6 compared to upgrading to a larger engine.
Throttle bodies, Turbocharging (done well), Supercharging, etc will all cost lots more when you factor in new management (omex ecu etc).
If you do use your cash on the 1.6 I wouldn't expect to be getting much over 120 or 130 horsepower if you are lucky.
Spending an extra £1000 on a 2litre focus will get you this upgrade as standard and you could then move that car up to ST or RS levels of power much more effectively (still expensive compared to buying the quicker car though).

its my will be my first car and i have heard that the 1.6 is underpowered so i was thinking of getting a little extra power out of it so its kinda the same as a 1.8. as for getting a st220 or 170, kinda out of the question as its a first car.for the 1.6 i have got quotes from 800odd,(nothing other than insurance i.e no breakdown cover stuff like that)
to just under 1100 from adrien flux with 90 days euro break down cover legal cover, homestart and breakdown cover an a couple of other things, so im thinking a st will be about 3000 to insure :/

The problem with the insurance would be that you need to declare your mods to make insurance valid. The kind of stuff you are talking about doing to it would be noticable if an engineer looked over it after an accident.
Best option for you IMO, would be to buy the focus, keep it standard mechanically and maybe do the looks if thats your thing. Spend the budget for modifying on advanced driver training of some kind and you will get to places quicker and more safely than you would pulling an extra 10 or 15 horse power from an engine.
If you do fancy a bit more of a fun drive try a MK4 fiesta zetec s, same power as a focus but a more interesting chassis, or a 1.7 ford puma. Both nippy cars and handle just as well (better in the puma's case) than the focus.

Have you checked the insurance groups for a 1.8 and 1.6...I'm not sure there is much, if any difference?? Like other people have said, the insurance on modified cars is scary! If you're not happy with it, then I'd get something which is lighter and/or more powerful as standard. If you're young and determined to have a quick car, the best way is a kit car or classic as the insurance is nothing like as bad.
Otherwise, it's a cliche, but some driver training is probably the best way to get places quicker. Or for that matter spending the money on a few track days (yes, even in the Focus - I'm taking mine to the 'ring next month).
