According to the Evening Standard BA refused to upgrade Boris for his flight to Beijing - he flew cattle class and arrived fairly dishevilled.

Now - put aside the obvious response "well he paid for an Economy ticket - why the feck should be be upgraded?" (even though there are any number of 'how can I get a free upgrade' threads on PH)

Here's why:

He didn't ask for an upgrade.

He's the Mayor of the City that is going to host the next Olympics. Like him or loathe him, this makes him a big deal in the VIP stakes.

He oversees a travel budget that must run into telephone numbers - this makes him a Very Important Client for British Airways.

He is an ambassador for the UK and BA is the flag carrier. There is a bigger picture here than whether he paid Economy and so can only fly Economy

I suspect this is all to do with petty revenge for Boris calling British Airport Authority a load of chimps after he (and hundreds of others) waited up to two hours for their luggage at Gatwick recently.

Willy Walsh needs to kicks someone's arse.

And just maybe unlike the previous socialist lot he thinks that if those below me travel cattle class i shall travel cattle class and he did not want an upgrade?

Sorry but I think you're talking crap.

Boris got elected on a low cost and reduced 'champagne charlie' ticket. He'd look a right prick if he then started prevailing upon companies to pick up the bill for the difference between his election sales brochure and your perception of the style in which he should travel.
