What would you do if you were stopped by a Policeman who wanted to comandere you and your car to follow some armed robbers who were making their getway in a stolen car.

Would you assist without hesitation or would you be a bit shy?

I'd be well up for it! It's not often (well, never) you get the chance to try your hand at 'pursuit driving', unless you're plod.

I think plod would drive, not you

I personally would be a bit shy but would have to carry out my duty.

I'd cooperate, but the smell emenating from my chamaeleon trousers might make the trip unpleasant.

So what happens if I were to crash into another car? Will I get done for dangerous driving? What about speeding past a scamera? Will other police officres believe me if I tell them 'This copper called Tony commendeared (?sp) my car, but after the event I didn't get his details'?

Blimey........I thought this kinda thing only happened in America (and on TV for that matter ). I'd be up for it.......but I don't think my car would. If it was the bike I'd tell 'em to shove it

Scum will only survie if we are alow it - police where invented to do this job with our support - its what we vote for its where we live and pay tax for - no hesitation you have my pride and joy to use.

However if I lived in north wales I may have a very different opinion.

Of course we would be fairly selective on which vehicles we hitched a ride in..

You could imagine a panda driving local bib jumping into a Tuscan or somesuch and stuffing it inside 200 yards though

He could sit in the passenger side of my Westfield, no screen and its hard to breath over 80mph and you don't slow down that much for corners.

Another good question Tony.

I'd be happy to try and follow from a safe distance. I would be a bit wary about getting too close or driving too fast, especially if they are carrying firearms.

Not being pursuit trained or having under gone any other driver training beyond IAM, I'd be concerned that having a copper sitting beside me egging me on after them would lead to me taking risks I'd otherwise deem too dangerous. Whilst I've no doubt that any speeding offences caught on camera would be quashed, I'm less certain that any accidents caused by chasing too enthusiastically would be ignored. After all, we do hear about coppers being charged etc for causing accidents whilst responding to 999 calls.

On the balance, I'd probably help. But I wouldn't be willing to take higher or bigger risks than I do through my normal driving.

At the moment, in my company car, I'd say sure, no problem and would even let Mr. Policeman drive if he wished to.

When I get my RX8 I'd likely still say yes but, no way anyone else would be driving it but me. Sure I could do a passable job though.

Out of interest, to pick up on an earlier point, what does happen if you break laws (cameras etc.) in carrying out such a public spirited action?

Common sense says that there wouldnt be a problem, but it would only be a mode of transport to try and keep the suspects in sight until a Police unit could take over.(within reason of course )

I think I would be quite happy to give chase and keep tabs with these scumbags to help the BIB to catch them. As far as stopping and confronting them I would not be interested, armed or not it is all too easy to get hurt by people who are desperate. At the risk of trying to sound like John Rambo, through being in the wrong place at the wrong time (no bravery involved here) I have been there before. One Copper V two scumbags really does not work very well, he really got it wrong. It all ended ok for him but it is really best to keep out of it and let the professionals get on with it.

Today, in keeping with current trends instead of assisting the Copper I would help man a mobile speed camera somewhere - a lot safer.
