I've just booked a trip for five of us using Air Miles. By the time I'd paid the admin, fuel surcharge, airport tax and various other non-optional charges it was £88 a head. Only just cheaper than Easyjet.

Clarify please. Did you use BA miles or Airmiles? Very different schemes...

If you used BA miles for shorthaul (which I am guessing you did as you mention easyjet?), then more fool you.
Shorthaul, and longhaul in economy is possibly the daftest use of them as you have to pay the tax & fees regardless which means little or no saving, and in some cases paying more in tax/fees than buying a regular ticket in cash would be.

Far better to use them for longhaul business & First class- where the taxes/fees come to around £400rtn all in , or for upgrading a cabin on a paid ticket

Next time, hop over to the BA board on flyertalk and get better advice on using them

BA Miles. I wanted to go to Nice.

For longhaul I have AA and United miles to use.

I can't use the BA ones for an upgrade because the company books through their own agent and BA wont let you upgrade unless you book direct.

Totally agree, using them on economy tickets is a waste.
The surcharges are still a con though.

at least you managed to use them. I tried for Club to Australia six months ahead of the trio: no availability. Tried last month for Mauritius three months ahead - no availability.

I've only ever managed to get long haul flights three times: once to SA, once to Antigua and once to Argentina (they only had availability in First for that one, so I went for it).

300k air miles sitting in my account at the moement and I keep having to pay for flights.

2 first class tickets to Barbados last year for about £200, not sure Easyjet could match that!

Anyone know if BA varies the surcharge depending on departure date?

But Nice is pennies on Sleazy .. why waste the miles on a 1,000-mile budget hop?

Very true - some First/Business redemptions on Star Alliance can hit £500 a head including the £80 airport tax! (there is a workaround, which is to book a cheap ticket to Copenhagen and fly on from there as the departure tax is negligable and there is no fuel surchage on SAS wink)

Very annoying when you're expecting the flight for free!!
