Stripping back to metal couple questions?
Discussion
Hi guy been storking this forum for a while for tips and tricks.
I have a 1983 Van that i have been trying to restore for about 4 years now, however its sat in the garage for the last 3 years with not much done to it while i was at uni and i now feel with some money coming in that i should get it sprayed so it does become more rusty.
current condision is that its striped back the the shell and i started to take the paint of as i wanted to start from the metal and change the colour from Oxford hand painted Blue to AA yellow inside and out.
so far got the drivers side and half the roof back to the metal it looks like its been a few colours in its time and there quite alot of filler all over it, so in total about 3-4mm to take off.
ive been using painter striper and a paint scraper but it doesnt seem to eat it away much.
so my question is
Are there any other more hardcore paint stripers out there that will do the job better or any other ways of getting back to metal fairly quick and inexpensive?
Also when the time comes to get it sprayed hopefully over this winter can anyone recommend a bodyshop in the Leicestershire area? and idea of price ive been quoted around a grand? and 500-800 from a friend if i help out.
Cheers guys
Matt

chemical paint stripper is probably the best way to go as it doesnt damage the metal underneath (like blasting or using zip discs)
nitro morse is best, but can get expensive if you buy small tins, so buy big, or look for an industrial alternative. when i stripped my bus i bought 5 litre tubs of some 'not for sale to the public' type stuff from the local body shop people - it did the trick!
either way use gloves and wear a mask, nitro morse isnt too bad, but stronger stuff will will you respitory proplems for weeks afterwards if you dont bother (guess how i know, and this was using it outside!!!)
blasting shells has its place, but only do the engine bay and the seams, if you try to blast the rear quarters or the roof chances are it will distort them, as will zip discs and the like due to the heat generated
you also have the option of getting it dipped, but this is mega buck and not really economic for a low value car like a mini
