Do automatics have clutches?

im about to buy this fiesta, and i belive its a slipping clutch, but having never owened an auto before.. i dont even know if it has a clutch to slip.

it drives normally ( for an athsmatic auto ) but from a standing start it need ALOT of revs for it to even select first gear and start moving.

I'm guessing (as it's a 95 car) that's its got a CVT transmission. CVT means Constantly Variable Transmission....or something like that.
Basically it is like an auto, but it does sound like it's slipping when you move off or accelerate. Someone more technical than me can explain how it works, but it sounds like it's working ok.

However, I dont think these gearboxes are known for their reliability...a local auto-gearbox specialist near me used to have loads of Ford CVT's in and they'd only done 40-50,000 miles

Sorry, I've no idea...I guess if you go to a local gearbox specialist they'll be able to give you a ballpark figure?!
