There seem to be an increasing number of these people on the roads... Usually middle aged to old, usually in a ford festa type effort, usually travelling below NSL. When you pass them, they'll hoot and flash their lights presumably to warn you of your impending demise.

Off to Mallory park Sunday morning in my van (!) with the racebike in the back, I followed this particular SN off a roundabout (which he'd rounded without indicating of course) up to 50mph on that fantastic new bit of the A6 to Leicester. At 50 he decided enough was enough so I nipped by (0700, gleaming sunshine, dry, perfect visibility for a mile at least no other cars in sight). As I passed there was the sound of a horn and then the sight of flashing headlights in the mirrors. This continued for perhaps 1/2 mile. And no, my doors weren't open

Of course I ignored him but this seems to be happening a bit more often these days, and clearly shows that some hard of thinking people out there believe the "speed kills" lie. Anyone else seen these guys in action? What's the proper response?

Saw an episode of one of these many police, camera, action programmes some time ago which feature one of these types.

The police unit was following 3 cars all doing top end of double figures down the outside lane. Some SN in the middle lane, after being passed by the 3rd car decided he'd be a vigilante and slow the 4th car down himself. Pulled out in front of the VASCAR and proceeded to trundle along at 70.

Comment was made on the programme that the police pulled him, cautioned him and still managed to catch back up to the other 3 speeding cars.

Same kind of thing happened to me last week. I was travelling along a long slip road onto a dual carriageway and I came across a car doing 30. After 10 secs behind him, the slip road widens to two lanes, so I accelerated to 50mph and overtook.

HONK HONK HONK FLASH FLASH FLASH... all coming from the slow car.

Now the sensible thing would have been to continue on my way without a care in the world. However I wasn't having a good day so I did something rather dangerous, which I'm not that proud of because I consider myself a safe driver.

Anyway, I pulled infront of him, did some emergency braking (down to 10mph), stood up out of my convertable, turned my body around 180 degrees to face him, raised my middle finger to the sky and shouted "FURK YOU", sat back down and drove off.

Not proud, not my best day and I don't think Tonyrec would be impressed... but it sure cheered me up

best thing to do, is just slow down gradually, over the space of a few miles and watch thier increasing frustration, eventually when you get down to about 20 they will overtake. cue flashing and honking on your part to give them a taste of thier own medicine

Correct response is to change down a gear and nail it. That way you're not dazzled by the flasing main beam, which I'm sure is an offence somewhere....

Had the same thing along the A419 going into Stroud - a line of 5 numpties doing 50mph in a NSL, with no space between them! I floor the Shark and the kickdown engages in a mili second. The Merc gearbox drops down two gears, the mighty V8 jumps straight on the cams and suddenly I have 4.7l of teutonic precision on full song... Just before entering Petrol Heaven, que the numpties all flashing and tooting their horns... Was I driving dangerously - No, I don't think so - clear line of vision, the road was wide enough and most importantly no traffic comming the opposite way...

I thought of slowing down to hold them up but rose above it. Mainly because they close the gate to the infield at Mallory when practice starts and I was running a little late, secondly I've seen the carnage caused by slow moving traffic on an open road...

The SN didn't look like they ventured above 50 so were small in the mirrors fairly soon.

At the risk of seeming boring, just ignore them. You can't re-educate the 75%+ of the drivers on the road these days who are not competent to drive even a lawnmower, so why get your blood pressure up trying.

Coopermans answer is of course the correct one.. Butr I stopped ahead, on a narrow lane and walked back turning on max pleasantness and charm to ask the clown who was now crapping his pants, what was the problem ? He could not give any coherent answer at all.

Enjoyed that immesnsely.
