Understanding the Griffith market...
Discussion
I am in the process of looking for a nice Griffith and am finding it difficult to gauge the market.
I am disadvantaged in making judgements on various cars as I am located in Canada - as you know the pictures and descriptions you find in adverts often don't come close to telling the story.
I am looking for a 1991 to 1993 (or very very early 1994), and I see the prices sometimes sitting in the 7000+ mark, but more often asking 10,000 to 12,000.
What I hope is that some people who have seen vehicles they know well and could pop me a private message describing the vehicle, it's asking price range, roughly how long it was for sale, and it's selling price if by chance you know (not asking for enough details to identify it - just to understand what the car is about, miles, condition, colour, engine). I prefer to keep most of this on private messages as a market such as this is ever changing, and posting such information on a persistent forum post has no value beyond the short term. Also, some anomalous cases may mislead if they get posted in isolation, and may be misleading to others reading this thread.
There is a reasonable amount of information to help me check the car once I am viewing it; but I still welcome any advice anyone may have.
This will help a lot, and I sure appreciate any guidance that you can provide - in parallel I am looking at cars on line, and attempting to build a short list of Griffiths that I feel are worth a view prior to arranging a flight to the UK.
Cheers,
Rob

Yes, I have spoken with Robert Ingleby, and know there are others as well. I may take this route, but I am very picky, and have a hard time putting such an important decision in the hands of someone else.
When I get my Griffith it's not going to be short term - I expect it will be permanent part of my family. If I pre-screen a number of cars, and in the end find half a dozen that I believe each could possibly be the one for me, then I should be able to make the journey, select the car, and close a deal.
It is possible that I will find a car that I would like to get a club member to look at for me - beer tokens would be supplied of course!
Flying in to the UK has the added benefit that I get a trip out of the deal! I have not been to the UK in many years, and so look forward to going back even if just for a short visit.
Cheers,
Rob.

Rob, if it's of any help, I would gladly look at a Griffith for you if it's in the North West of England. I'll give a purely independent account of what I find and will make the seller aware of what I'm doing.
I'm not a Griff 'expert' but do know what I'm looking at compared with mine which is a genuinely nice, honest example.
Just give me a shout if it's of any use. It might help out in some way or other.

Thank you so much, I am amazed at how much sense of community there is amongst TVR owners around the world, I always find someone is ready to lend a hand or give advice. Your kind offer is right up top of the list.I'm not a Griff 'expert' but do know what I'm looking at compared with mine which is a genuinely nice, honest example.

If I find a car in your part of the country and need a pre-review I may well take you up on the offer. You say you aren't Griff expert, but judging by the spirit of your profile and Griffith review you sure have the passion.
Cheers,
Rob.
Thanks again,
If I can be of any help here in the Midlands Rob please feel free to give me a shout too. I'm not an 'expert' either, but I've owned and maintained my own Griffith for 4 years and am getting to know my way around them now.
I'm not doing this out of the kindness of my heart though
I'd just like to have the excuse of checking out a car for someone overseas as a reason for having a good old poke around another Griffith
Don't know if you're in a rush or not but I'm away 28Aug to 9Sep though

You could always drop James Agger a line, he seems to get the pick of cars, and only sells ones he'd buy for himself. He's had several Griff's I would have been interested in, apart from the one we have now, which he was good enough to put me onto the then owner of, which I bought, despite him being on holiday, so not getting sellers commission on.

There are advantages to paying the premium that Rob Ingleby and James Agger charge;
Firstly, they will guarantee you a top notch car.
Secondly, they would be more likely to be happy about sorting out the paperwork and arrangements for exporting the car from this end. (I'm afraid that if you were a prospective buyer looking at my Griff and needing it to be exported, I would say too much hassle, can't be bothered)

If I were buying sight unseen I would certainly pay the premium for Rob or James - and I may still do so. Talking with Rob in particular he is very willing to help with the transfer of funds, and delivery of car to the shipper for export (of course being a business it's only fair that he considers other charges for extra work - but it saves a trip to the UK). I assume James would be much the same. Down side is then I have no excuse to visit the UK, and I also lose some control. My standards may differ from someone else's standards, and this leaves me open to some disappointment when the car arrives on my door step.Firstly, they will guarantee you a top notch car.

Interesting comments about the hassle - it actually isn't too bad. For the seller it's effectively zero hassle; the car gets sold as normal, and then the purchaser deals with the export, and at the other end the import.

Is the date limitation (92-93/4) for export purposes?
Correct. To import to Canada the date of manufacture must be at least 15 years old to the month. Get caught trying to cheat on this one and they charge you duties, and one of our two taxes, then make you destroy it, or re-export it back to the place of origins paying the return shipping and likely duties back in the UK! No messing about here.
Both maggit and I are within easy striking distance of James Agger if you want something looking at there. Probably 20 mins from me and 30 mins from maggit.
I've bought 2 Griffs from James, he's a good guy and knows his TVR's, although I've never seen him driving a Griff so he might be a bit of a girl
