German equivalent of Companies House

We've been asked to quote for what could be potentially a lot of business for a German company. The letter that arrived in the post struck me as being a little amateur in it's presentation so alarm bells are ringing a bit.

Is there an equivalent of the Companies House web site for German companies, where I can check them out? The company name has a GmbH suffix, if that makes any difference.

The "Handelsregisterauszug" won't tell you an awful lot though, only:
- Name of the MD('s)
- Capital
- Where the company is registered at
