Does anyone have a decent pic of the steering rack gaitors on a Cerb please?
The ones I saw yesterday at my local motor factors didn't look right. And its possible the ones I had on mine were wrong.

Also, how much CV grease do you put in when putting new gaitors on? Fill the thing up or just a heavy smear? Sorry but I've never done one before :|

Thanks
Cad

Do you really mean steering rack gaitors? mine had no grease I got mine from racing green (TVR garage)and I thought I posted the part No. on the parts thread. If you mean the CVJ boot I havent done mine but normaly you smear the joint with an oz. or so of grease , do not fill it up.

Yes, but when comparing the said part with the ones already on my rack, they don't match.

Is this specific to TVRs?

HIghly unlikely.

The rack may be but I'd bet that the boots will be available off-the-shelf for something else.

If you can manage without the car for a few days you should take off one and bring it along to a helpful auto-factors and check their books to see if you can find a match.

I only ask, because, at least on my classic Minis, I've always added alot of grease to the CV joint, not just smeared it with grease.

You have steering rack. No grease required and the boots protect the moving piston shaft within them, and you have CV Constant velocity joints on the rear of a cerb not the front (It is not 4 wheel drive) These need packing with grease.

Two differant things.

Yes, I know, however v8cer said the CV joint only needs smearing with grease, not packing, so I was wondering whether this is correct or not.

A CVJ is originally fitted ready greased, when you replace the gaitor you only replace the grease lost with the old gaitor you dont fill the gaitor up. When you apply this new grease yes it is smeared/packed into the joint and most of it is extruded out of the joint on the first drive.

Hi. I believe they are Ford Granada, I have checked mine when I fitted spacers to stop 18"s rubbing. They should be dry, no grease. I need to order new ones as one is split. I will check against the Ford ones.

The CV joint ones ARE Ford Granada ones.

I'm 100% sure of that as I'm fitting them to mine at the moment.

Not sure of the steering rack ones though. frown

Slightly off topic, but I need to replace both track rods on the Wife's Mazda 6, (they are worn from not being greased at manufacture). Asked the local Ford / Mazda dealer for price on Gaitors, and they want £62 eacheek

Bin bag and black tape me thinks.
