Wedge batteries
Discussion
Hi all. I need a new car battery for my 1980 series 1 Tasmin. The problem that I have is the battery tray isn't very wide, so I'm having problems locating one the will fit. They are either powerful enough but to wide or narrow enough but way under powered. The size of the battery tray is 10 inches long and 5 inches wide. So does anyone know where I can get a battery from (pref in Essex arera)? Any help much appreciated.

My battery box is 7-1/4" X 12" so I can't help you by comparison.
There is a coding system (ETN) for batteries which includes amp hour rating and dimensions. Unfortunately I can't find anything online that decodes the system. ETN is variously given as European Type Number and European Tyre Number.

Spent days looking into this some months back and had exactly the same problem. Batteries seem to come in standard sizes, although the CCA and Ah may vary. One size is slightly to big but the next smallest is quite a bit too small. By a fluke one day I was looking in the local motor factors retail place and found a Crompton battery that had high CCA and Ah for it's size. I'll have a look tonight and let you know the model, sizes etc. I did also look into these spiral cell batteries but I didn't find one that would fit, they are also very expensive.
I've been over this about every 3 years since first buying a Tasmin in 1989. When the Tasmin first appeared, you could get a 75 Ampere Hour battery that would fit. That's about the output of a battery fitted to a 2.8 Granada (logical therefore). However, as far as I can tell, and I've tried a whole host of battery suppliers over the years, that size/power hasn't been made since about 1986-88. Therefore, the best you'll get to fit is about a 45-55Ahr which is designed for a Metro, unless anyone else would like to prove me wrong (and give me the part number so that I can buy a bigger one too!!)

Here is the info on the battery I found:
Crompton Heavy Duty Battery, Type 110, Cranking power 675 amps (to SAE Spec), Reserve Capacity 135 mins.
Dimensions are 235mm Long x 125mm Wide x 200mm High.
I think you will find the next size up is 255mm x 175mm x 210mm. This will not fit, as the 175 width is too much by about 10mm.
All this info is for Tasmin's where the battery is located on the drivers side between the inner wing and pedal box. I think on later cars it was moved.
Hope this helps

Steve - That sounds just the right battery for my Tasmin! Where did you get from? Can you buy it over the counter, or is it a speacial order? If you have any further details, please can you email them to me via my profile.
Thanks.
