47 or 50" HDTV recommendations?
Discussion
A mate of mine is about to buy a new TV to put on the wall, and I said I'd tap the experience of the PH collective to steer him in the right direction.
He's after 46-50" in size, with "full" HD and ideally 2 or more HDMI ports. Annoyingly he's not given me his budget, but I assume ideally under £1.5k. Any experts care to recommend a particular TV (or failing that the brand he should be checking out).
Many thanks,
Dan

Nothing can touch 'em at that price point.
I have two Panasonic Plasmas - a 2.5 year old 42PX60 and a 6 month old 37PX70 - ie both of them aren't 1080p - they are 768p. Absolutely fabulous picture with Sky HD and Xbox 360 on both of them. The 1080p models are even better. I counselled one of my mates to get one but he chose one of the 40" Sony Bravias instead. He saw it in the shop and reckoned it was so good that he bought it. He came round my house a month or so later and didn't mind telling me he was gutted as the Panasonic, despite being 768 instead of 1080, had the far better picture.
Also, I haven't seen him about for a while but try derestrictor if you are buying - he's a PHer and runs digitaldirect.co.uk. They are plenty cheap and you may as well give him your business, imo. He supplied my 37".

50" Full HD, under £1.5k? Only one choice, Panasonic PZ80.
Interestingly on http://www.digitaldirect.co.uk/products/index.asp?... there are about 5 different variants of that... can anybody explain the model differences and price differences?parapaul said:
Worst "I can afford a 50 inch TV" thread ever?
Not me, I'm asking for a friend, and mainly because I know there are a number of people on PH who work in this area for a living or have more than a passing interest in TVs and all things electronic.
I'm sorry you feel somehow offended by this - a quick glance at Curry's website suggests you can get a Samsung 50" plasma for £699, hardly a "look at me, be amazed by the size of my wallet" sum for a TV. It's not my fault you feel somehow threatened by someone asking about large TVs. If it makes you feel any better, my penis is tiny.

The ones with CAB suffix come with a full av cabinet stand hence a little more costly. Otherwise they have a pedestal type stand.
PZ80 I think is last years model, PZ800 current model.
PZ81 has Freesat HD tuner in built
You have a choice of PZ80 and PZ85. Both are current models. Very little real differnce between the two however. The PZ800 has one or two extra features but costs a few bob more. Other option as explained is the 46 OR 50PZ81 that has built in Freesat HD.PZ80 I think is last years model, PZ800 current model.
PZ81 has Freesat HD tuner in built
Until the end of Aug 08 Independent dealers [like me!!!!] are giving a FREE 5 year Panasonic warranty with each set
Good value screen ...
