I had a trailer for sale on eBay, it failed to make the reserve, but a potential buyer I had spoken to earlier on in the week, phoned and offered more than the item failed to sell for. We did a deal over the phone, even though he had only seen pictures, and he wanted to collect that night. He was travelling from South to me in the North, so he arrived at about 11pm’ish. He looked around the item, produced a set of collapsible step ladders from his car, looked around my car port and noted ‘Oh nice car, (4wheel drive and expensive) oh you have moved said item, it wasn’t pictured in this area was it? Wasn’t it pictured by some trees and a wall? I will use my torch as your security lights keep going off.’ Anyway the deal was done, he screwed his number plate on the trailer, he paid and off he went with the trailer.
NOW. The paranoid bit. Last night at about 11pm, on my security camera, I saw a low loader pull up outside my house, lights flashing, a man walked down my drive, I looked through my bedroom curtains, he walked off, low loader drove away. Had the buyer tipped off someone that a car could be ‘available’ for collection? I’m upping my security.
Any views PH's?

I wish I could be more helpful, but...

You aren't going to get much sleep in the short term. Sorry. Can you lock the car away somewhere? Little point hiding it, as they already know where it 'lives'. frown

I throw perfectly serviceable stuff away rather than eBay it. Sad, and possibly mad, but I just don't need the hassle. Is there a "I fookin hate ..." smiley?

Hi there - can't add to your security concerns apart from perhaps put something behind your car that could make lots of noise if moved, make sure its obvious you have CCTV etc...

Could you clarify the bit that I've quoted above as I have no idea why this would happen when buying a trailer?

Yes I will lock it away elsewhere tonight. The 4wd was 'on it's own' so he may have thought we were out for the night, but as he walked down the drive, he would noticed my other car parked at the front of the house. My mind is working overtime now. agree with you re the smilies.

He said he wanted to look on top of the trailer for damage etc. (box trailer)

If I was going to steal a car I wouldn't use a low loader with flashing lights...!

Well I thought that at first, then....well no one suspects a breakdown truck. The buyer was so slick with the numberplate thing as well. All very suspect to me. I asked him to come the next day in daylight, 'I work very strange hours' he said.

Yes, you're right to be concerned. WHen you complete a deal on eBay, don't you get the buyer's postal address? That might be worth keeping in case anything happens.

right to be cautious IMO

Doubt he bought the trailer with the intention of stealing your 4x4 unless it was pictured with trailer? Seems like an expensive punt on the buyers part

But that said, maybe just an opertunist, Cant be too careful

I think you may be paranoid. He didn't see the 4*4 in the pic, so unless he has a mate follow him round everywhere with a trailer just in case they find a car to nick......................

But still, your car is alarmed, he knows you have security lights etc...

but guy with large trailer equals possibility of large 4x4 or similar, the buyer may have been checking the trailer was yours and the pictures off ebay matched, after all you could have stolen the trailer to order as soon as he won the auction.

He wouldn't have had to buy the trailer though, he would be better off just looking at them if he was looking for 4wd vehicles to steal?

Yes, I'm pretty sure there are easier ways to 'case a joint' than buying a trailor off Ebay. rolleyes

No your not being paranoid, about 13 years ago I sold some spares for an RS turbo I had at the time to a guy using an add in loot, two weeks later the little fker came back and stole the car, happyish ending though as he was eventualy caught and sentenced to 3 years biggrin
