Where would be the best place to invest £100K that will be safe. I assume it will need to be split up as the banks, etc, will only pay out a maximum of £35K should they go bust.

I'd recommend you speak to a financial advisor. It depends how long you intend to invest and the risks you want to take.

Savings accounts don't offer a lot but are safe, up to 35k. Premium bonds are tax free and safe, but again, don't offer a good return and you can only invest up to 30k. However, the only thing I've made noticeable money on in the past 6 months is premium bonds!

And I've made noticeable loses on my house and investments. frown

I'm not into investing in anything, so say I won £1,000,000 on the lottery and I wanted it all in the bank, I'd have to have about 30 bank accounts so its all safe?

My worry is that due to the problems some of the banks have been having, I wouldn't like to put it all in one place then lose two thirds of it. Maybe I am being a little over-cautious.

Relatively speaking it would all be safe but only the first 35k IIRC is covered if the bank folds.

Losing £965000 wouldn't bear thinking about!

I wouldn't bother with splitting the money across various banks... the government could never afford to pay out if a big one did go pop. The £35k thing is just an attempt to instill confidence back into the banking sector... IMO anyway.

£100k and safe? hmmm, plenty of fixed rate bonds out there for various terms. Make sure any account you opt for has banded rather than tiered interest rates.

This is PH not Motley Fool. If you want any advice other than buy a car, you're in the wrong place!

You could just park it for a month in a money market account for a month. That's what I tend to do. (I'm lazy).

There's another problem with the £35k guarantee, in that the guarantee is per banking licence, not per bank. So, if you'd got £35k in, say, First Direct and £35k in HSBC (which owns First Direct), you'd only have £35k covered as both banks operate under the same banking licence.

Also, imagine how easy it'd be to extract your cash if a bank went pop- I can't see HMT doing overtime to reunite people with their money...

I realise that PH is mainly car related, many other topics do get covered and a bit of friendly advice can never go amiss. It's not that long ago since you were telling us all your Walls Bangers and Cheesy Mash meal. By the way, have you tried Walls micro sausages, 2 mins in the microwave and hey presto.... not bad at all.

That's why I put that post in the food section, as it was about food. In P&P the answer is always buy a car.
