Leon's front pillars
Discussion
Had a couple of scares this weekend, mainly due to poor observation but directly caused by the thick front pillars (B-pillars?) on the MkII Leon.
Was coming down a hill towards a T-junction, looked left, looked right, cars coming but plenty time to get out onto the road, so I went. Just then this Ford Focus appeared from nowhere, and I missed clipping him by a matter of feet. To say I was touching cloth was an understatement.
Happened twice in the space of two days. The second time I'd stayed put, but it was scary that the pillar completely obscured a whole car, once again. I'm going to have to lean forward and back at junctions from now on, just to be sure. Never had to do that before.
I love nearly everything else about the Leon, but having pillars that thick in those positions is just daft.
Unfortunately it's a pretty common problem with a lot of cars - super-fat pillars which are supposedly for "safety", yet obscure your vision and get you into more sticky situations than before!
We have an Altea and the pillars are a big problem on that too, I double check before almost every maneouvre after nearly side-swiping a Merc on the motorway shortly after buying it.
Give me spindly pillars and the thrill of impending death any time.
The Leon's A-pillars look like a nightmare too - I couldn't even get into one in the showroom because they were so low and angled, had to put my hand on the roof and limbo in!
