I am not a great fan of the wine bar type pubs which serve food as invariably it is absolutely average at a silly price or you leave hungry. I am also not one to recommend places as invariably I have been disappointed when I have folowed up a friends recommendation, .
But....
Anyway, if anybody is stuck on the A1 as I was on Saturday in the Leeds festival traffic and needs a break from the trek north I would certainly pop into Wetherby, and to a place on the main street (they seem to have 2 main streets, and it is the one which you get to by turning left just over the river bridge) on the left called Bar 3 or something similar ( car park behind the bar).
The menu looks pretty typical food: stuff they can heat up in the microwave with chips but the reality is different. My wife is low carb so we had the 'Ploughman's for two' for what we presumed was £7.95p each. When it eventually came (it was slow) we realised what the wait had been for. It was a work of art on a single large plate. A whole game pie in quarters, chunks iof cheddar and Mensleydale, salad, bread and a fantstic sweet pickle to die for. I had skipped breakfast and in the end had to take some of the cheese and pie home with me because I couldn't eat it all.
And when I came to pay the bill it was £7.95p for two! With two drinks: £10.50.
Anyway, geeky review over.
Been back twice since. Pies had shrunk but always a different combo, so I guess they use what they have. Still excellent value IMHO. Pies are low carb if you take the pastry off and keep it for the dogs as we did!
They also do OAP specials but I have t time to go before then. Worthy 'greying up' for.
It is Bar 3, parking at the back if you can't park out front.
I notice Wetherby still has a number of 'proper' butchers selling local meat. All in all a very plesant town, even if it is pricey to live there.
