If you hate dialing 0870 numbers from your home phone, I do, try this websitehttp://saynoto0870.com
Click on the search to find an alternative number and type in the 0870 or company name. It will reveal normal alternative numbers saving you money. Doesnt always work but ive got a 90% + success rate.

But you might not end up at the best location for your enquiry. A lot of these services have complex call routing scripts associated with them trying to ensure callers are routed to the best call centre or agent in the first instance.

The 01/02 numbers listed on the website will have no such scripting. As a result you may not get the response you were anticipating, as the person answering the call may not have the training or capability to deal with your call.

They don't always go to the same answering centre.

at least if you're calling local numbers... not lo-call numbers then it comes off your free minutes on a mobile or home free minutes etc...

Been using that site for years.... great for the pound per minute tech support lines etc

In general it is a good thing to bypass the call routing. It means you are more likely to speak to someone intelligent who might actually be able to do something about it. If you let the call routing do its thing you end up with some standard muppet who is employed to go through a script which they can barely read which is designed to fob you off so nobody who is paid more actually has to do anything.

the 0845/0870's are sent to a landline number anyway, as long as the number on that site is 'it' then you will still go through the same IVR depending on how it's setup

In the US, you get everyone (it seems) offers 0800 numbers - these are free.

In the UK, everyone (it seems) and certainly the Government only have 0870 premium line numbers available - is that insulting or not?

The bigger problem is the migration from 0870 to 0844 and 0871 numbers. I am seeing a lot of companies requesting a new landline number so that you cannot bypass the NGN. The new numbers are charged at the same rate 24/7. No evening and weekend discounts.

The biggest issue is the ridiculous fees charged by mobile operators to call these numbers. O2 charge up to 35pence per minute to dial an 0844 number. Very few contracts include 08 numbers within the bundled minutes. This is the same with BT landline deals, you pay for all of the lo-call, local rate and national rated Non geographics.

We should however be grateful for the telecoms market opening. Without it we would have such great sights as this to dream about.
