I think (hope) the father will be feeling far worse than any criminal trial could make him.

But yes, a bit of a muppet for having an airgun with young kids if they have not been taught how to handle it.

You are of course assuming that most parents these days have any small sense of responsibility or duty of care for their offspring...

The bit I was puzzled about was the fact he was using it for target practice with little kids about. Could he not wait until they were out or in bed or something?

I'd stop short of saying he deserved something to happen because of his stupidity as a little child has been critically injured, but his conscience will have a lot to cope with, more so if the little one dies...

Knowing this government though they will just see it as an excuse to ban air rifles. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

I agree. You should have to pass IQ (and spelling) tests in order to get a licence to raise a child.

It's not often I say this - but we need a new law/offence - criminal stupidity.

That is to say, displaying idiocy to a ridiculous degree - such as the two cases above. Sentence needs to be sterilisation and 10 years hard labour as a minimum.

Within 30 years our country's gene pool would have improved remarkably.

You could also have a handy catch-all offence of going equipped to be stupidbiggrin
